For me the whole thing gathered pace when they realised the challenge cup final generated maximum national publicity in the media
By Reaching the then massive challenge cup final annually and obviously winning it it gave them enough publicity to fuel the ‘ rugby town’ line.
They reached the final 8 years in a row Between 1988 and 1995 and it was such a formality for their supporters that they discussed where they would be staying the year after for next years final.
The extra exposure and income arguably allowed them to become a full time club in early nineties.
I actually find this myth interesting and always looK to explore and discuss it because without this it will continue to be spouted especially by the ill informed media.
Always worth a discussion especially on sites like ours .Just read the rather corporate article with the rather irksome comment of “ the football department “ being mentioned within it.
A football department exists at that giant multi national corporation that is Luton Town????
He will easily find another job once the current crisis is over.
Good luck to Jonesey, a man at the forefront of the start of the clubs great journey in the glorious mid 90s .Best description of Latics I have seen that ‘ biggest smallest club ‘ .
A small club with 10000 diehards who sound like 30000 when roused , so very proud of our club and culture surrounding it.
Have a feeling we will be back very soon10,000 die hards? Struggled to get 7500 home fans in this season.
10,000 turning up every week would be great.
Totally know what you mean though.
Would like to see this season scrapped though.
Just wouldn’t be right to re-start now. Shame for Barrow and yet another lifeline for Horwich but come on seasons finished, contracts are nearing the end and hopefully we can start again at the end of August.[/quote]Maybe got a bit carried away there With 10000 agreed .
Looking unlikely this season will finish especially with the social distancing measures on gatherings etc.Best description of Latics I have seen that ‘ biggest smallest club ‘ .

Have a feeling we will be back very soonEvery day feels like an old fashioned Sunday back when I was a kid In the 70s and early eighties ,
All that is missing is episodes of Bullseye however been able to
complete a lot of DIY that was put off and also sat down for meals with my good lady on a regular basis which has been great.
Regular exercise is also no bad thing and Has helped keep
The spirits up and the weight off and the good weather has helped.
It will all end at some point and hopefully all of us on here will be ok .
Thoughts with Alex Cribley , a great player in his time.
Stay safe all. They tried it as an experiment I think but could have been rugby related as they had the upper hand back then so may have been a ploy to grab some of their spectators.
Not sure it lasted very long due to one or two incidents ‘off the pitch’ and they soon returned to saturdays.
Remember the relentless ‘“Wiggin is a rugby tarn “RL publicity machine ? This was at its height back then and we as a club felt the brunt of it with little coverage in the local rags.
We really were pushed into the back ground back then and it still rankles with many of us even today.
The board got some stick at the time if I remember rightly however they always seems to have the welfare of the club at heart .
Got our own back in the end though and the revenge was very sweet indeed when we overtook them onto the global stage!Remember the bubble coats and later the Israeli jackets that people wore.
Would favour a finish of this season however agree with other posters that it most likely not going to be finished as it is due to the ongoing restrictions.
However maybe a cull of the cup comps and international fixtures Next season would help the two seasons marry up however the situation looks hopeless at the moment.
Will be very emotional when we do see those Tics line up again that’s for sure !I think they should take a pay cut and help their clubs survive the crisis.
Burnley are just one example but there are many others and it premier clubs are struggling then it is anybody’s wild guess how the clubs in the EFL are fairing !!
The players could easily do it given that many of them will have property portfolios etc and I know ( through somebody else) of a very very mediocre current premier league player with 50 plus houses so income won’t be an issue will it ?
Has to be done in my opinion especially given the gilded lifestyles these people appear to lead.Big club and more expectation at Sunderland and a bigger squad so more competion for his place.
Good business for us and looked a good move at the time however it hasn’t worked out sadly.
A huge favourite here though always scored important goals which is a good measure of a valuable striker.
He will surface successfully again I’m sure .Big club and more expectation at Sunderland and a bigger squad so more competion for his place.

Yes I agree they could finally dispense with the play offs , surely the most unfair way of settling league promotions.
Was only brought in to restructure the leagues in the mid eighties and kept despite the unfairness of it to most observers initially.
Rubbishes then concept of being the best by way of league position over 40 plus matches and would be a good place to sack it.
That way the best teams get promoted and fairness all round.Finish the current season and shorten the next one by scrapping the unneeded extended pre season and shelve the now very uninteresting EFL cup.
Have a ban of all international breaks next season and scrap next winters PL break also.
It is only fair and in proper and true spirit that the season is played out to a conclusion whenever that is able to take place regardless of what certain self serving club representatives may say.
If everybody stays indoors as requested by the government and health officials then maybe the season could recommence in June and be played to a conclusion by mid July once this awful time is over.
Then just start the new season in late august and play twice a week to clear congestion which scrapping those (mickey mouse) cups would do.
wishful thinking on the first day of this horrible lockdown but fook me, we all need something to look forward to at the moment even if all of the above seems very unlikely.Returned tonight with real fear we won’t seen a bag of wind kicked for maybe 12 months.
Social isolation could last that long , grim times and future ion the game and sport we know in very serious doubt.
Beyond the pale and very grim times -
