Given as it’s sort of topical, being at Springfield Park watching us win a night game (can’t remember who it was against) whilst England played West Germany at Wembley and beat em 2-0
Half the blokes at Latics watching the game with radios pressed to their ears…..then rushing off after the game (9.15 finishes then) to get back home for the highlights on Sportsnight12th March 1975 ….jeez
Sorry Athletico, but whilst there are certainly a few truths in your post, I refuse to believe that Burton, Bristol and Blackburn have had better squads than us over the course of the season so far and all of them are making a far better fist of staying up than us. That is down to team management.
I thought Caldwell to be over cautious (though I would certainly have given him longer) but he looks gung ho compared to this tedious nonentity. Can’t argue … “nil” again and no more than we deserved…yet another game where their keeper could have played, sat in a deck chair
A bit of late huff and puff (to no avail) when they finally decided to field the line up they ought to have started with. Simply not enough attacking intent
My first and last away of the season
You in WS5 Sammy ?
I too saw the bloke screaming at the directors box and pointing at Joyce, screaming for him to be sacked …..apoplectic probably covers it , I thought he was about to
Have a ‘funny turn’I remember playing at Anfield in the League Cup and Peter Howitt (AKA Joey Boswell from “Bread”) coming on the pitch at half time to record a song with the Kop.
They thought it would probably be a good time to do it as they were only playing Little Wigan.
They were wrong!!!
All the Latics fans started a 10 minute rendition of “who the f***ing hell are you” and Peter Howitt eventually sculked off the pitch with a quick hand gesture to the Latics fans, and a new song of bye bye bye bye bye bye bye bye aimed in his direction.
Needless to say, no recording with the Kop was possible for Mr Howitt.
Was it the 2nd leg (also played at Anfield)? As I deffo missed that .. delighted to hear it anyway, did the plant pot address the kop in his best scouse ? The Manc born, London raised prat
Anyway a couple of golden memories, were doing Stafford Rangers 4-1 on Boxing Day 1970 over 8,000 on for a non league ‘league match’ I don’t think that was beaten until an end of season decider in the days of automatic promotion about 10 years ago
And the late penalty from Jim Fleming to beat Peterborough and earn our 3rd round tie at Maine Road……again a Northern Premier League team at home to what were then a mid table 4th division outfit and we had 17,000 on ! biggest crowd at Springfield in my lifetime……We’ve had lower gates in the Premiership ….Welcome back Mutty!?
Any road, yes the broader area goes by the name of Marsh Green , there’s a clue right there.
That said before the stadium was built ….there stood Robin Park sports fields (at least 10 pitches) home to many schools and sports clubs, I played on em every week for 7 ‘school years’ and from memory they were excellent …..BUT…. the groundsman guarded em jealously and any significant rainfall and the games were very quickly called off !Regardless of the location the ground/pitch is viable, provided enough money is spent on the drainage/infrastructure which up to now hasn’t been the case. Until and unless this work is undertaken this problem won’t go away. You can put the best turf money can buy on top (and maybe they have) but it won’t last if the base is frequently saturated.
There’s been lengthy threads in Vital covering this and it seems that aside from the high cost, the required works could take up to 12 weeks and if that’s right then there’d need to be some serious rethinking from both clubs regarding fixture arrangements….. but regardless of that Whelco (rather than either club?) needs to grasp the nettle or things won’t change.
Not sure who the bearded lad is at the back tl4e but it isn’t Eric Makin …. blond haired with a ‘tache….I knew him reasonably well as he was my form prefect !
Buxton for me ….won every header an tw***d that fat lad Hugill on a few occasions ….
I do think we got far more wrong decisions given against us than ones that went our way.
I don’t believe any ref is biased as such, but they are human and consciously or otherwise they know if they give a contentious one or any major decision like a sending off where there’s even the slightest of doubt ….against Feruson or Wenger and the like and they’ll get pasted by them on TV, the back pages will be full of it and it will run on for days on Talksport and the like
and they’ll be castigated all over the shop.Give those dodgy decisions against Wigan or Burnley or Blackpool Etc….. and it’s ” so what?”
Ivanovic 3 yards offside in the centre of the 6 yard box at Stamford Bridge…..Mata offside for the stoppage time winner an all ..same game…..though that was at least ‘close’
Kieran Gibbs obvious straight red on Valencia when through on goal ….gets a yellow and 0-0 becomes 0-4
Defoe 5 yards offside as above but the steaming little shyte should have already been sent off ……went straight through Caldwell (I think?) On the half way line ….no yellow or red….then finally got booked for encroaching at a free kick
Eh ? Isn’t it Tony Callaghan behind all that tripe (pie) ?
I was there in ’73 ……..but won’t be there tonight
I went last in Rosler’s time , lost 1-0 to a 30 yard screamer , although they had a hurricane wind behind them, We had the same wind behind us 1st half and never had a shot (nothing changes)
Bloody freezing there an allI think you misheard that tale slightly,
,…..they are tipping a statue of Maurice Lindsay, down an Ince pitProper hard nut was Gerry Gow, I’d like to have seen Joey Barton try giving it the big ‘un with him !
I thought he DID look interested to be fair Egg, just that he was pretty inept ….especially second half
