Goose Green LC held its 50th anniversary over the May Bank Holiday weekend and on the Saturday night hosted two old Wigan bands, Winston and Copper Kettle. It was great to see the club packed out again and a fond reminder of how things used to be.

Blimey, they’ll be bring back Gary and Vera and Harry Pemberton, next! ;)
A bit of a plug for the night I must admit and a bit of self promotion!Oh, and in response to the other posts, the lack of punters in these places is not restricted purely to Labour Clubs.
Maybe so, Sammy. Nevertheless, I didn’t think the £27 per head I paid to see bin-lids with Gordon and Percy’s faces on then taped over the front of a skanky old train to be particularly good value for money.I agree that’s a rip-off but in fairness to the ELR and all others wanting to host a Thomas the Tank event they must pay a royalty for the privilege, no doubt the reason for the extortionate cost and the reason why they no longer do it.
What I find difficult to comprehend is a certain posters obsession with Mr Martinez and his failings. It’s quite disturbing and leads me to conclude that Bobby must have been servicing his wife or perhaps killed his dog. At the very least he’s place all his life’s savings on him being sacked before the years out, only for reality to finally sink in that it isn’t going to happen.
Goose Green LC, like many other similar clubs, is not alone in trying to draw people through its doors and stay afloat. These clubs, so popular in the 70’s and 80’s, are dying. They do not appeal to the under 40’s and once the current but ever dwindling generation has passed through it’s difficult to see how they can continue.

The club is doing a repeat of that night on the 15th January so if you fancy a nostalgia trip get yourself down there and it give your support.
Back in the days of steam, train spotting was an honourable pastime, probably more so in Wigan because of its strong association with the railways. However, the appeal was diminished when the diesels and electrics came along, after which it attained its nerdy tag.
Running and maintaining steam engines is a very expensive business. To achieve this and allow the preserved lines to continue, the East Lancashire Railway for example, requires the services of numerous unpaid volunteers to maintain the locomotives, track and infrastructure. Whilst it may seem a rip-off, ’Thomas the Tank Engine’ weekends provide an essential source of revenue for these organisations in their struggle to stay afloat. The alternative is that you and your kids never get to see a fully working steam engine in all its impressive glory and that would be a shame.
according to this we’re going to finish mid-table:-

and that to me is criminal.Surprising yes, but hardly criminal.
If he were the anticrist, surely he could summon up his evil minions and get us some wins !How can we mere mortals possibly hope to understand the mind of the anti-Christ?
Always nice to see some infighting. My take is that as long as we are in the Premiership we will struggle, gone are the days we would be confident of finishing top half.
Fans on here get frustrated by the poor results, positive people and negative people alike. Some decide to get one with it and try support the team, which is all we can do as fans. The amount of negative comments you hear in the stands cant help the players.
Others decide that change will make things better, and feel they need to vent their anger and sweeping statements on this site. My take on this is that its easy to poke the finger of blame, but if you really had the solution then you would be a football manager by now and earning a fortune, you aren’t so it all comes down to opinions. I rarely hear conclusive arguments that might solve our problems. Simply sacking Martinez will do what, destabilise the club, undermine the confidence of the players who play for martinez, and end up with a new manager another 4 transfer windows until we have a settled team, which will give you enough time to rise up with the sack ???? whoever internet campaign.
We are where we are and Chairman Dave has said Martinez will stay, so get used to it and get behind the team.
My solution would be to bring in some managerial experience to help Martinez.
That’s all very well but Martinez is the anti-Christ so must be eliminated!
“loudmouthblue”, obviously. :)
never needed one yet and cant say I will so I stand by itSaid, safe in the knowledge that should you ever require their help they won’t hold the same prejudices against you.
a man who has never given as much as a groat to anybody in his entire life.Is this a fact or is it your opinion again?
i’ll use the same logic -we got battered at home by a team that will get relegated –you understand where we are heading now and why people are worried
Except it isn’t the same logic, is it?
Sardt quoted facts to make a point about how people use so called logic to argue their case, whereas you expressed your “opinion” that Blackpool will be relegated.
That is unless you actually know Blackpool will be relegated, in which case I would be interested in how you know that.Or just subtle way of letting it be known that he’ll sell for £100m.
Would that be the same G Barrow that got sacked by Whelan after a humiliating 6-2 home defeat against Mansfield?
Bit like all the beating we’ve suffered in the past 15 months.
