It will hve its ups and downs but I think it will be a good thing in the long run.
Both posts are correct.
We survived in that era because of the money generated from a Wembley trip. When the new stand was being built it went massively over budget and put us in the sh*t. Maurice can be seen on YouTube in an episode of Up and Under being advised that we had no money and yet he buys Martin Offiah for a then world record fee.
The reason why we entertained things such as the world sevens, Middlesex sevens and the games with Bath were because we needed the cash. Had the cup run lasted another year or two it might have been different but that left a huge hole in the finances we just couldn’t fill.
I think it’s been said since though that the council wouldn’t allow two new stadiums to be built so it the dream of a seperate ground is exactly that.
Correct SW and then Lindsay came back hailed as a hero despite being the guy who started the rot.
We’re under less pressure than the sides at the top. Away from home, probably down, expected to lose. If we go to these places and frustrate early on then the crowd will turn, especially the geordies.
The money from the sale AFAIK went to pay the debts and the rest was swallowed by the board who all strangely left within weeks.
The funding for the JJB came from Sport England, Wigan Council and DW.
No. I think Daz is all of them.
It’s been covered on here before many moons back!Didn’t understand it then. Don’t now.
I have affiliations to other nations because of family, but I’m English so I support England.
It’s almost as bad as scousers and mancs not wanting England to win because the fans don’t like their players.
Wigan RL wouldn’t entertain Whelan at the time of the CP sale and remember it was sold a few years before they left there. Indeed the owners at the time had no alternative but to sell because of the financial mess they were in and sold in the hope that Bolton would agree to them sharing the Reebock. The board wouldn’t entertain DW because they were getting a better deal from Tesco. They believed they could build their own stadium in Wigan and share with Bolton until it was built. That was knocked back so they were homeless until Whelan offered them the stadium.
All detailed here pretty much http://wigan.rlfans.com/fusion_pages/index.php?page_id=48
On another main forum thread Standish helpfully posted a link to Companies House’s site and the club’s accounts. What is of course interesting is that you can look at all sorts of information about companies’ financial set-ups.It is interesting that under Wigan Rugby League Club Limited we can easily see that Dave Whelan was a director of the rugby club from 9 Feb 2000 to 1 Dec 2007.
https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/00174692/officers?page=2The reason I find this useful to have in black and white, is that also for the company we find this – a very clear advance from Tesco to the rugby club under the terms of a contract of sale dated 27 Feb 1997, ie 3 years before DW came onto the Warriors board.
https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/00174692/charges/VIFaAZ_tFALDenurDBX7jPHsDAUI know we’ll never persuade the cuckoos that DW didn’t sell the ground under them purely so he could build the (then) JJB, but it’s not based on people’s faulty memories, but proper financial public documents.
He wasn’t on the board when CP was sold because they wouldn’t agree to his proposal. Pretty much common knowledge.
Its common knowledge that Jack Robinson was the chief architect in the financial problems that Wigan had. Whelan only became unpopular when he prevented a play-off fixture from taking place not long after he’d sold up.That said, I did find the latest WAFC annual report interesting. Particularly page 23 – para 20. It seems the Latics have a 25 year lease to play at the DW.

And who is that lease with?
Ah yes……WIGAN ATHLETIC.
It’s called business.
Did save us but also set us back a few years as well by trying to buy the league under a salary cap.
Where has all the money gone?
No need to ask them. I’ll answer that one for you

Thank you[/quote]
Yes, but the likes of Yosser have confirmed that the books have been firmly cooked.
Tin hat goes on
I would like to see Kellet given a chance playing in the middle of the park. He’s excellent control on the ball with an accurate pass. He always tries to play his way out of trouble rather than hoof. The new Perkins ? (Puts motorbike helmet on top of tin hat)
His best football for us was playing in the attacking mid role last season in a handful of games.
Just for the most recent memories the poor bus driver trying get up wallgate while were allsinging will grigg on fire outside little fiffifteen!
Remember that as good as our first promotion from 4th division against Mansfield.
I love Wigan athletic thank you!Sit down for the champions. Stand up for the champions. Shoes off for the champions.
Same here but not many decent loans ever arrive just unwanted, unfit players from other clubs or youngsters who havnt proven themselves.
Have we had one decent loan player this season? Possibly Conolly,at first he made a difference as we were desperate for a right back.I would rather know they are no good when they’re on loan than when we have wasted money on them and then get stuck with them. Swings and roundabouts I suppose.
