I’m not being funny but I once dreamt of playing at the Nou Camp for Barcelona but I’d settle for a 10 minute run out for St Helens Rovers at Parr Stocks at the moment!!!
If he isn’t getting a game for Hamburg I doubt that he’ll get signed by Real, United or Barcelona so he can dream on. I think the original article is intended to mock Liverpool fans that potential signings no longer regard them as one of the “biggies”
Swindon – I’m not saying that Latics/Bobby/whoever didn’t have to work hard to get Moses & McCarthy to come to Latics. What I’m saying is that to compare bringing those 2 to the club compared to bringing someone like Stephen Ireland (especially when he commands the sort of wages that he’s on at Villa) is somewhat way off the mark
On the subject of McCarthy however, he does seem to have a very sensible head on his shoulders. From what I’ve read he spent time on trial at Liverpool when he was 16 & they offered a deal for him to join them which Hamilton accepted but which he turned down because he realised that he would be better off playing 1st team football at Hamilton than youth/reserve team football at Liverpool for 4 or 5 years. So looked at in that respect, yes it was a bit of a coup. When looked at in terms of when his club said “reet its time to move on”, the reality is that only Wolves & ourselves put in bids for him so its not that much of a coup
Whether or not Moses is regarded as one of “Britain’s most promising talents” is a matter of debate when even the manager who signs him was not prepared to give him a start the best part of 12 months after signing him (nor does he start every game for the England U21’s). However even if you do regard him as one of the most promising talents in the country it doesn’t escape the fact that Latics were the only top flight team to bid for him – other clubs no doubt had a look at him & decided he wasn’t ready or worth the gamble & Bobby thought otherwise. That may well go on to prove to be an absolute masterstroke on Bobby’s part but only time will tell.
Yes both players could have said they would wait for better offers to come along but both players were pretty much told they were going to be sold in the respective transfer windows, both players wanted to move at that time & Latics were the best offer on the table at that time
Completely different kettle of fish to if Ireland is on the market
I’d love a player of Stephen Ireland’s quality at Latics but its never going to happen in a million years
The comparison with Bobby being able to get McCarthy & Moses to come to Latics over other clubs is a bit way off the mark – the only other club in for McCarthy at the time we signed him was Wolves & you had Latics (a relatively established top flight club) & Wolves (newly promoted & favourites for the drop) he chose (IMO) the better club for him – and I remember reading at the time that it was his friendship with Graeme Jones that swung it.
With Moses, no other top flight club went in for him (despite all the rumours) so it was Latics against some top half Championship clubs so it wasn’t really a coup for BobbyIf Ireland does leave Villa they’ll be a cue of top flight clubs of far bigger standing than Latics who go in for him which is a completely different situation to when we brought in McCarthy & Moses
Having seen the incident in slow mo on sky sports new this morning, like LMB I’m at a loss to see how Kirkland managed to get knocked out from that coming together
he does eventually knock his head into Elmander’s chest but by this time the impact should have been absorbed by the clash of the legs, midrift etc..
That isn’t to say though that somet happened with his noggin that the TV cameras didn’t pick up
I caught Bobby’s interview on Sky Sports News this morning where he said somet along the lines of that they were looking at reinforcements anyway & our current injury situation has added a sense of urgeny to that search so i think its safe to say new faces will be brought in.
Exactly how may & who, is anybody’s guessNo we won’t!!! ;)
23 December 2010 at 3:01 pm in reply to: Boselli’s NOT going back to Argentina according to his agent #53873It does seem strange that the only striker we have/have had on the books recently who looks like he could play that role is Jason Scotland, as I have suggested in another thread. :?To be honest, I’d be tempted to agree with you in terms of he knew what was needed to play that role
His problems were a lack of the talent, pace & nouse needed to put the finishing touches to some of his not too bad hold up play
23 December 2010 at 2:59 pm in reply to: Boselli’s NOT going back to Argentina according to his agent #53872didn’t he pick up a bit of a lengthy injury last week?
What I struggle with is the “so what, it had to happen sometime” attitude of some of those who defend/support him – that to me isn’t about seeing the bigger picture
You are missing my point. I am saying that I (me, nobody else, couldn’t care what anyone else wants) thinks that we are likely to be relegated at some point and that I would rather go down trying to play the way we are, just because that’s the way I like football to be played. I know you don’t, but as my granny used to say, it would be very boring if we were all the same.
I know what you’re saying Griff but I’m really struggling to understand why someone would think like that.
Leaving aside the fact I don’t like the style of football Bobby is trying to get the team to play (Spain play it successfully & I find it dull as dishwater) – if a manager was to come in & state he wanted to get Latics playing the same style of total football as the Dutch national side in the 70’s but it was painfully obvious after 18 months in charge that he simply wasn’t up to the job of getting the squad to play that way, or in getting the right types of players in to enable his team to play that way, regardless of the fact that I would find his ideals admirable then IMO that manager should be replaced because quite simply he wouldn’t be good enoughSame with Bobby at present – even if he was attempting to get Latics to play the type of football I enjoy but was achieving the same results, same performances & same league placings as he has I would want him replaced. Regardless of the fact that I know that one day the club will get relegated from the top flight & that I liked his theories about the game because what would be happening on the pitch would be proof that he wasn’t up to the job. Personally I would rather Latics prospered playing Bobby’s way than fail playing the style of football i enjoy
As you say life would be different if we all felt the same but if someone isn’t good enough at what they do at Latics then they should be replaced – in my opinion of course
23 December 2010 at 12:56 pm in reply to: Boselli’s NOT going back to Argentina according to his agent #53864On top of that, the only players you ever hear about having trouble “settling” are those who aren’t being a great success at their new clubs
Cause and effect, maybe?
Ian Rush couldn’t settle in Turin and was gash. Or was he gash anyway, didn’t get picked and therefore couldn’t settle?
Mark Hughes wasn’t a particular success at Barcelona. Was it because he was suddenlty rubbish? Or struggled to motivate himself because he couldn’t settle?
Gary Lineker did very well abroad. But he loved the lifestyle.
On Boselli, I never said he had spat his dummy out, which implies some level of discontent with his playing lot. I just said he may not have settled very well into the area. Beech Hill ain’t Buenos Aires, after all.
I get what you’re saying Griff but I personally think that its players who aren’t a success/don’t get picked who struggle to adapt
I know Ian Rush came out with the classic line of “I couldn’t settle – it was like living in a foreign country” but I don’t think his type of game suited the man marking style of Italian football at the time. Therefore he struggled for form from the off, got dropped & life suddenly doesn’t look quite as good when you aint hero worshipped like he was at Liverpool & he starts pining for home
Same with Mark Hughes at Barcelona i.e. I don’t think his style suited the spanish game. He certainly had no trouble settling when he spent time on loan at Bayern Munich where there was a much much more British style of football in Germany. he got picked regularly, started scoring goals, was worshipped by the Bayern fans & enjoyed his time thereThe only player i can recall who has been getting picked, playing well & scoring but is rumoured to be unsettled is Carlos Tevez but these rumours have only really surfaced in the last 12 months at City where he is rumoured not to like the manager
22 December 2010 at 5:24 pm in reply to: Boselli’s NOT going back to Argentina according to his agent #53814I think it will all be forgotten about if he can ship out Boselli and replace him with someone decent. Let’s wait and see.I won’t hold my breath on that one based on Bobby’s record of 4 strikers signed = 4 duds
That’s poor going by any manager’s standardsi don’t think there are many, if any, Latics fans who think that we have a god given right to be challenging for a european spot – financial constraints or not
I also don’t think that there are many Latics fans who don’t accept that sooner or later we will get relegated
Just speaking from a personal prespective – I fall into both categories yet I want Martinez out because he is hopelessly out of his depth & has a complete inability to learn from his mistakes
I can accept that if you shop in the bargain basement for most of your signings you may well uncover a few gems but most of the time what you’ll discover is sub-standard & is in the bargain basment coz no-one else wanted it
If & when Latics get relegated I want it to be inspite of the players & managers doing their damnedest to keep us up not on the stubborness & pig headedness of a manager who insists that the only way to play football is his way & who will persist in making the same mistakes over & over again in order to try & prove itWhat I struggle with is the “so what, it had to happen sometime” attitude of some of those who defend/support him – that to me isn’t about seeing the bigger picture
22 December 2010 at 4:49 pm in reply to: Boselli’s NOT going back to Argentina according to his agent #53809I don’t doubt for a second that him not settling or spitting his dummy out at not playing could well be the major reasons for the rumours now surfacing about him moving on
If they are the reasons however it still doesn’t alter the main issues I’ve highlighted above – in my opinion at least
He wouldn’t be spitting any dummy out if he was playing regularly. To be playing regularly he’d need to be able to adapt to Bobby’s system & be scoring goals. He’s doing neither so it doesn’t answer how someone who is convinced 1 up front is the correct (& only) way to play can spend so much money on someone who quite clearly isn’t suited to playing in that system. You can even at a push forgive the signing of Scotland in respect because at least he’d been successful in playing that system for him in the past (whether a 30 odd year old journeyman who’d never played in the top flight was ever likely to be a success is another matter)On top of that, the only players you ever hear about having trouble “settling” are those who aren’t being a great success at their new clubs
As I’ve said I know all manager’s can spend money on duds but the basic flaw in Boselli should have (and were obvious to some) been obvious prior to him signing – that they don’t appear to have been & that the club now seems prepared to move him on reflects very, very badly on Bobby IMO
22 December 2010 at 3:34 pm in reply to: Boselli’s NOT going back to Argentina according to his agent #53797i think its more a case of the system he is being asked to play in – The Argentinian league may not be played at the pace the premier league is but it can be very physical
At times (very brief ones) I think he’s looked like he could be a decent player but its painfully obvious that he doesn’t have the attributes to play as a lone striker. That should be clear to anyone who has even a smidgin of footballing knowledgeBut it wasn’t to Martinez when he made his stand over the player & who he ultimately spent a massive chunk of Latics very small transfer budget on him
I aint seen the table but some journalist in The Star said it yesterday
I agree with most of your post but I’ve only just stopped laughing at that bit. Journalist?? In The Star?
Fair point & it aint my usual paper of choice but it was the only one left in the cafe (well butty shop on Aigburth Road) where I was having lunch
Can’t remember the guys name but it looked like the fella who fronts that really irritating programme on Sky Sports on a Sunday morning for an hour
On the plus side there were some nice cahoonas on display within the rag!!!! -
