Putting ancient ‘sack Fergie’ posts up to vindicate the advantages of sticking with a manager. Well done that is one out of thousands that have been proved wrong. Wigan Athletic did the same with the ‘martyr’ Roberto Martinez, 4 years of the worst football i have ever seen in my life and then relegation but all that is forgotten because of an F.A Cup win in which there were 2 tricky games. Full squad out struggled against Macclesfield and a (then poor) Bournemouth before being tested.
Without that ‘Fluke’ Martinez’ 4 year tenure would have been a complete failure.
I see a striking resemblance happening at Everton with the Europa campaign. He will probably win them the Europa League but get them relegated in the process.
Where is the statistical proof?Which club smaller than us or on a similar budget have achieved what we have and continue to punch above their weight a decade later?
Which of these clubs are in the solid financial state that we are?
Wigan Athletic are not in a solid financial state, They are in the black because Whelan is in charge. When he goes, You watch that plummet into debt, far worse than 1995.
If i gave you a million pounds you would be worth a million pounds. Once Whelan takes all the loot Wigan Athletic will be worth sod all and then he will evict the club from the stadium. he will somehow try to get back into Rugby no doubt now Sky have started pumping money into it. It’s an easy ‘in’ for someone like Whelan to get involved in a sport such as Rugby League
More spin to keep the (then) manager Martinez. Although it should have already been budgeted for or even paid for in principle, I bet you any money you want this will not happen. The blame will be, ‘Well we couldn’t stay in the Prem so we can’t afford it now, It’s the fans’ fault for not putting an extra 6,000 bums on seats and that extra 2m a year or so from that would have paid for it all’
“I am putting wheels in motion to ensure Wigan Athletic is looked after in the future”
Yep, you’re right!
It was engineered to cause a bit of fuss and indeed was a wind-up (for you lot at least)
But i mean every word!
Wigan Athletic will NEVER grace the Premier League with it’s presence again because Whelan has created a monster. When he waddles off at the end of the season with all the accumulated cash he leaves the club in a 25,000 stadium they won’t be able to afford to run. “i want to make sure the future of Wigan Athletic is secure” Bullshit!! within 5 years of him going he will have them kicked out of their own stadium. There will be a clause in there somewhere where he would be able to fuck them over. That’s what he does. he likes upsetting folk, it’s how he get’s his kicks. be playing Buxton at Robin Park in a few years. They were always going to go the way of pre 1995, Whelan just stepped in and used the club to make money for a bit. Now he will let pre 1995 continue and let them rot away.
Mercenary of the highest order.
This ‘Striker’ argument that is going on has an awful lot of similarities. The fact is, for me, Wigan Athletic as a club have failed drastically in signing the correct strikers for 6 years. Not one has been successful yet when they have moved on to other clubs they have been a roaring success.
So who is to blame?
Which striker that we sold/let go has been a “roaring success” when they moved on to other clubs ?
Dicko, Boselli, Sinclair and Di Santo,
The others that were at the DW were just here for one last pay day or had a bad injury when they moved on.

Not me, I got fed up when we were at the peak in 2009 when it became clear that the chairman was just in it for the money and not success, simply selling players for major profit and signing mediocre just to about stay in the league. Under Bruce we had a real chance of progression and had a fantastic team but he decimated it. I started going in 93′ when i was just about old enough to go on my own and watched the rise home and away. I was a JCL then but i was a grown man when i decided i had had enough. Money has crucified football. Time to pack it in.
One of the best stories since the league started in 1992 and an example to nothing tread water clubs like Aston Vile and Blunderland ( last trophy 1973 – tossers!!!) who just try to scrape to 40 points.
I hope with all my heart one of these two pay the price for this with relegation this year but fair play to Southampton and they are a fantastic example to any mid range club with a bit of ambition that it can still be done. That said how long is it before one of the stinking rich clubs comes after Kouman and his, players again but if they get in the champions league it will give them a chance to keep them.
nothing but respect for themThey really are a fabulous team. I love watching them play. They go forward with so much energy. I had them down for relegation certainties after selling all their players in the summer.
Listen, as much as i dislike Whelan, And i won’t lie about that fact. I will say one thing. Wigan Athletic were the first REAL unfashionable club to make it to the premiership and break the stigma of one season wonders. The base model for many other clubs afterwards. There has been an influx of promoted unfashionable clubs afterwards.
However, when the whole warchest thing and selling all the assets every season became apparent bollocks, i started to lose interest. I scrapped my season ticket when Bruce left and the ‘stars’ were sold. We had an opportunity to kick on but Whelan didn’t want that. The revenue thing would have been worth a lot more with higher premiership finishes and there was every chance of that happening without any financial worry.
Has the original poster got any idea how much the Liebherr’ family are worth in comparison to Dave Whelan & thus how much they can put into Southampton or how much they can put up as security so banks will allow overdrafts/loans etc??
Their wealth makes Dave Whelan look like he’s on the dole. You should/could have ended that sentence after the bold bit. For a clever lad, Yosser has always been a bit of a prick when it comes to Whelan. Him and Bickymon must have been sacked from the same sweeping up jobs in the JJB warehouse.
Well i logged on to read the comments after yesterdays match but there weren’t any so i thought i would force a post. The old ‘Whelan’ bashing always get’s a good bite ;)
Southampton also get crowds twice our size and have a far bigger income. The reason why we have no debt and break even is because of Dave Whelan. If we did what you’re suggesting we may still be in the Premier League but it’d be built on a house of cards like Portsmouth.Nope, That is crap too, Do you know, a full house every match at a cost of £20 per ticket only equates to 5m per year in crowd revenues so the ‘we can’t compete because of low crowds’ argument is pure bullshit. so they are about 10,000 down per game meaning they lose out on about 2m a year.
So whats the next excuse
Blackburn 21/10 on Saturday to beat us
Hate to say it, but we will be spanked
Lump on time I reckonDare you to bet £100 and take a sreenshot of the bet slip
I like the original concept in the main, however i would suggest a 3 match ban and 75% wage for the month if proven guilty rather than the docked points system which could be open to abuse I.E – A player like Balotelli who is a notorious nuisance would peobably get his team docked points deliberately in order to manufacture a move away.
Surely Tom Daley should be on any panel of experts? What does he know? He is a shit diver
Erm, For some reason i can’t see the BBC making a big song and dance about Latics with the current Whelan – Mackay scenario going on. To be quite blunt, i was surprised they didn’t bleep out the name Wigan Athletic when Chappers said it.
