Suspect that the undercurrent of fraud/money laundering etc may yet become the big story at Portsmouth – we’ve already heard about large amounts of cash exchanging hands in offshore accounts which is why Redknapp is up for tax evasion

Could you ask him why the policy of playing the wingers on the wrong wing for their natural foot, and doesn’t this make us too narrow, predictable and easy to defend against

in reply to: The Last Post for Martinez #24826

“Yes, so did I, that last comment’s ridiculous. N’Zogbia has been outstanding for most of the season, under Bruce he did nothing apart from a goal at Sunderland and many of us (myself included), we wondering what we had paid £6m for”

I stand by my comment. Gave us better balance last season with Valencia in his correct position on the right as well. How many crosses from the byline has NZogbia got in this season like Valencia did yesterday, and how many times has he cut inside, tried to do too much, and lost it.

One of the reasons we’ve not scored enough this year is he’s playing on the wrong wing.

Does the poster think Valencia was playing on his wrong wing for us – maybe he’d have been better on the left according to the logic on here

“Nzogbia – a very good RIGHT winger, playing on the left wing, confused, wanting away from the madness.”

There was me thinking that traditionally you needed to be able to use your right foot to play on the right wing.

NZogbia was far more dangerous under Bruce, who played him in his correct position, on the left wing.

“Pompey… well you have created your own destiny with your own mismanaged greed.”

Just wondering where we stand on that measure. My understanding was that they lived beyond their means for a lot of years because Gaydamark said he would bankroll them. That was why the accountants never rang the alarm bells earlier.

Just wondering where we’d be if Whelan fell under a pie van tomorrow and our safety net disappeared, and we get relegated.

Although Baines is miles better than Bridge anyway, so debate should be academic, if I was Bridge I wouldn’t let what Terry did ruin my chances of playing in the World Cup. Should be Terry feeling awkward not him. I’d let the t****er stew a bit.

Don’t think any Latics fan has seen enough of him to make a judgement. Looked useful to me, not noticeably worse than Diame, Thomas or Scharner and pretty good on set pieces – made a change to have someone who could beat the first man. Spoiled my fun of picking a current Latics British team as well. I’d got to

    GK Kirkland
DF Boyce Bramble Caldwell Pollitt (useful left back!!)
    MF McCarthy Koumas Watson Sinclair
    CF Moses(?) Jones(!)

Some great stories about Larry Lloyd as Latics manager in the Fred Eyre book – kicked into touch – well worth a read for those who haven’t come across it.

He used to fly into rages and Eyre had to clean up the mess. My favourite was in the days of only one sub, where he had a massive row with Mickey Quinn and subbed him at half time, forgetting he had already made his sub. As the players were running out for second half, Fred Eyre realised they had only 10 men and they had to fish Quinn out of the bath.

Always will like him as the first Latics manager to get us promoted in the League.

in reply to: Question of the day #22874

He definitely will score in a 6-0 win. Heres some other things that will definitely happen.

Kirkland will pull his back slightly in the warm up, but decide that he can play through the pain
Koumas will look ever so slightly interested
Martinez will play his players in the right positions, sit down and stop making pointless ineffectual minor adjustments and hand signals
The stadium will be full, and 10,000 half season tickets will be bought on the night

in reply to: 32 Quid toneet for a Dad and Lad…….THATS THE PROBLEM! #22458

TL is dead right. Its too expensive to encourage new fans. I live in the North East and would have gone to the Sunderland game, but £28 for an adult, plus whatever it would’ve been for my lad was too much for me.

I’d give every ST holder 5 free tickets a season for any game to sell to their mates for whatever they could get. Subsidise the ST holders and reward them for getting new fans in.

Noticed tey had a very similar crowd on to ours against Fulham – just over 16,000, but no special 2 minute segment cutting into their match coverage on their lack of crowds on MOTD. Weird that.

    in reply to: corners #22398

I hate that practice of bringing everyone back. One thing I liked about Jewell was he always left players up, and we got a lot of goals on the counter under him. I can understand it for direct free kicks where you need a lot in the wall but not corners

The ultimate waste of a player through this was in 05/06 when “the mighty” Newcastle came to little Wigan, and brought everyone back at corners, including Owen. What a 5 ft 6 cforward is going to contribute defending corners I’ve no idea. Especially as we left Henchoz back – good player, but not exactly quick enough to live with Owen in a ball over the top…

    in reply to: 4-5-1 #22237

KTF…If you played 4-3-3 properly with wingers on the correct wings, and players doing their job properly you’d have 3 players attacking a traditional byline cross. These would be the centreforward, the opposite winger coming in onto the far post, and the attacking midfielder of the three doing a Platt/Scholes/Lampard/Gerrard and hitting the box.

As Waddle said last night though, this is not the philosophy of foreign coaches in general, who seem to prefer trying to play their way through the crowded middle.

    in reply to: 4-5-1 #22209

Depends if you think it is 4-3-3 when attacking. It may be in theory but not in practice.

By the way, I heard a good exchange on R5 last night on a similar issue. A City fan was on moaning about how Mancini plays the wingers on the “wrong” wings. He reckoned Petrov hadn’t beaten a man since being put on right wing when he’s got no right foot, and he’s playing Wright Phillips on left. Waddle reckoned it was a foreign manager thing – they’re not into players getting to the byline for crosses – they want players cutting in and playing 1-2s with midfield/forwards on their best foot, leaving them better able to defend if they lose it. To me that is dull, safety first football, and not an effective way of attacking.

in reply to: i wont be going to Sunderland because #21647
I’m actually going with some Bar Code fans in the Sunderland end.
Think it will be interesting to see if the home fans moan as much as ours do !

LH – I sat in the Gallowgate end with the Newcastle fans watching Latics in 06/07. They moaned far more than us, usually when Bramble put 1/100th of a foot wrong.
