The squad isn’t good enough you’re right but we don’t have the finances that the clubs at this level have. Like many have said before, our 3rd choice striker cost £1m where some clubs at this level spend around £10m on theirs.

We were stupid for not getting the cash for Powell when we had chance.
Maybe the take over was contingent on getting promotion and Whelan decided that keeping Powell rather than cashing in was worth the gamble.

Grigg doesn’t play because Cook prefers the zip lob long ball hit n hope tactic that doesn’t suit Grigg or MacManaman.
The absence of a playmaker in mid field will tend to make for a long ball approach no matter who the manager is.

He prefers the older “I’ve worked with him at ……” Type of player.
Most managers look towards players they’ve previously worked with so this is not exclusive to Cook.

I’m sorry but to blame “mindset” when tatically were inept is nothing more than excuse. He’s filled the squad with players who he thinks are good enough and those who weren’t even given a glimmer of a chance are shipped out as fast as fook or are they players bought in by others ?.
How do you know he ever thought they were good enough? Maybe they were the only players available at the price or willing to come to Wigan Athletic. As for players that were shipped out how do you know the reasons why those decisions were made. Maybe Cook didn’t have any say in the matter. Players leave clubs for all kinds of reasons which may not necessarily have anything to with their perceived playing ability.

I’ve seen enough recently to see the players have also had a enough so it’s time for a change and others given a chance.
Who might these others be that you think deserve a start.

And Sammy, if better service was given to our forwards (width and played in) rather than Peter Kay it up front would you prefer Grigg or Garner on the end of it ?.
I’m no great fan of Garner but Grigg has missed a fair few “sitters” this season, chances that many on here claim are his forte.

Griggs not playing because that’s Cooks preferred option, a league 1 – 2 tactic wack it up there and prey
So, when we started this campaign with a fully fit squad playing an open style of play and winning a few matches you think Cook then decided to reverted to a “wack it up there” style because that was always his preferred option?

The team needs player investment. Whether the new owners are willing to fund that at this stage and will entrust that to Cook remains to be seen.

The issue here is the mindset of the players. Prior to the opening goal we were playing well and competing, then missed a great chance followed soon after by conceding a poor goal. We were still in the game until the second went in and lack of confidence thereafter was visible.

Criticising Cook for his team selection, primarily for not playing certain players, Grigg and McManaman especially, is of course what punters like to do regardless of the fact they have no idea what injuries they may be carrying or how well they are performing in training. Grigg has hardly set the place alight when he’s started and McManaman is a shadow of the player he was when last here. Are they really any better than Vaughan, Garner or Windass.

Cook’s position is certainly under threat not least because he’s not made any real headway in changing the mindset and instilling confidence. Once the rot has set in it’s the most difficult challenge a manager has to face. And the lack of quality players at his disposal, whether that’s down to him or the constraints placed on him by Whelan during the summer, makes his task even more difficult.

I like Cook. I want him to succeed. Whether he will get that opportunity remains to be seen. Changing managers, as we are only too well aware of, is no guarantee things will improve.

If you’ve been left out just turn up on Tuesday and you may get a game.

Makes as much sense as some of Cooks selections these days.

Happy with my first half performance but was found lacking in the second.

As I understand it “winning the ball” is totally irrelevant – even though the pundits and the man down the pub claim they know better.

Same here, which is why I was interested to see TLs thoughts on it. Perhaps a regular thread piece if he doesn’t mind the hassle. ;) CLs version of Dermot Gallagher on Sky.
I’ve not seen the Ben Mee challenge in real time so can’t comment.
The van Dijk challenge is most definitely a red; studs up and out of control. I cannot understand how he’s got away with that.

Even my blatantly biased work colleague admitted it was a red but suspect his opinion might have been different had they lost.

You can be offside just in the opposition’s half and not be causing an obstruction! Had the goal come from a direct corner it would have stood as you can’t be offside directly from a corner but if you take a short one and receive the ball back in an offside position then it’s a free kick ! You would think that they know this shit in training. On saying that, opposing teams tend to have one if not two on the goal line for corners. Today they didn’t!

My point was you need to be interfering with play to be offside so how was that possible when the goal was scored nearly 30 yards away?
And haven’t seen a replay yet.

He received the ball when in an offside position and his pass (cross) directly resulted in ball ending up in the goal. I can’t see how you can argue that’s not interfering with play.

What has changed your opinion since the start of the season when we had pace and creativity and Gibson was class?

We punched above our weight which resulted in his premature optimism being dented, that’s what’s changed.

I think we are a mid to lower-mid table team which is how I expected this season to pan out. Anything better than that will be a bonus.

I think some on here need a reality check.

We are a newly promoted club. The transition from League One to Championship was not funded to any great extent by the Whelan family who said some time ago they would not be investing any more of their own personal cash. The club and the potential new owners had stated this was a season of consolidation, the primary goal being not to get relegated. We were playing a team at the top of the league strongly tipped for promotion with a highly regarded manager. We had at least three, possibly four, first team regulars our injured. We lost by the odd goal in a game which for all the frustration of the performance could have snatched a point. Yes, the results of late have been disappointing but unless we have most of our first team regulars available this should not come as a surprise.

Personally I don’t think we should link the 2 together. The Irish struggles are totally unique and separate from any other war fought. Lets not compare heroism with terrorism.

What shouldn’t be linked together is sport and politics.
So are the two sportsmen in question not making political gestures? Simply by doing that they are opening themselves up to abuse in the sporting arena rightly or wrongly but especially so on such an emotive subject and whilst they use that arena to get their point over. They could simply refuse to play and avoid wearing the poppy in that way.
Yes they could but if the politics wasn’t there in the first place that wouldn’t be necessary.

Very poor tonight.
You’d think we’d be up for it after the win on Saturday and the need to reverse an awful away record especially after the embarrassment at Preston but we were slow, lacklustre and out fought.
We didn’t have a single shot on target yet went one up and we’re awarded a penalty.
Jekyll and Hyde performances.

Connolly, Naismith in support and Vaughan spearheading the attack could explain the difference from Saturday. All three are not Championship standard.
Nobody looked Championship standard tonight.
