We’ve flattered to deceive. I don’t think this team is any better than those that have gone before. Where it is different is that the players did at least give the impression they cared and were interested and genuinely thought they could go on and win it. Out of the players on show only two stand out as having the potential to become genuine world class and that’s Kane and Stones. The rest are average at best. So unless some new talent comes along in the next few years, especially in midfield, I really don’t see us being in any kind of position to seriously challenge for international honours.

Pickford and Maguire?
World class?

The biggest regret is that it was a missed opportunity. A favourable group draw and then playing the less fancied teams got us to the semi-final against a team we would have chosen to play.
I can’t see the likes of Germany, Brazil, Spain and Argentina being so bad at the next World Cup so even if this England team does develop in the next few years they will face much tougher opposition than was on show in this one.

Most of the team have seen it, and they were the colours worn.
Would you care to consider an alternative?

Not really. It was a tongue-in-cheek remark.

I noticed there are a couple of posters on here who have not responded to my question of whether it would have been OK with them had he not won the FA Cup but kept us the Premier League and still left.

Would they still have labelled him a Judas even though they openly admit they would not swap winning the FA Cup for anything.

I would have thought that the politics surrounding Russia and Croatia would have been more of a hot potato! No dodgy decisions yesterday that I was aware of!

I’m not aware of any particular friction between Russia and Croatia but you are correct in that there was no controversial incidents requiring VAR in that match.
Should it have been Russia against us in the semi any marginal decisions requiring VAR would certainly have been weighted more in their favour, more so than it will be against Croatia.

Another pointless negative attention seeking thread!

Why is it, Sammy has made a proper genuine point. I totally agree with him how much pressure do you imagine the ref will be under if Russia are playing for a place in the final. Cant you join in and add a relevant response and opinion. Bollox they have just scored.
He’s a wind-up merchant looking for a bite. Best just to ignore him.

I think you misread the situation Little Roy, we never had anything against Bobby; but we would have had more respect if he had stayed another year and tried to get us sorted, rather than baling out !

So if Martinez had kept us in the Prem that season and not win the Cup then leave rather than what actually happened you’d have wish him well?

He took us down and should have stayed at least one more season to try to get us back, he looked out for himself and went to Everton.

Hope he doesn’t win another trophy ever, i’ll be rooting for Brazil!

How do you live your life with such bitterness? He took us down, yes, but there was a small matter of an fa cup win. One of the best days of my life.

I wouldn’t trade another year in the premier league for that, and if you would then, fair play, but I think you’re mad as well as bitter.

I remember being at the Swansea game before the final. If we’d won that we’d probably stayed up. But I wouldn’t in a million years trade that for a loss at Wembley. And, looking at the championship table right now, I doubt there’s a Swansea fan that would not prefer winning an fa cup over their achievements since.

I think it’s brilliant what Roberto may achieve and the only scenario I won’t be cheering him on is a Belgium-England final
I think you’re missing the point, the FA Cup win was the greatest day in the clubs history and i wouldn’t swap it for anything, if Martinez would have stuck around another season to at least try and get us promoted i wouldn’t have a problem.

No one is talking about swapping the FA Cup win to stay in the Prem!
So, if Martinez had not won the FA Cup but kept us the Premier League and still left that would have been OK with you?

I’m just happy we’re through, especially since we did it on penalties.
For all their gamesmanship – or whatever you want to call it – some of those Columbian players or members of their families might not be around to see the next World Cup.

Opinions on who is the best team can be made on varying criteria and who’s to say which is correct. It is also markedly subjective.

Considering de Gea is regarded as one of the best ‘keepers in the world he’s been a massive disappointment in this World Cup. He got nowhere near any of those penalties with two of them going straight down the middle.
And Neuer hasn’t been much better either.

Would you say that of Russia today Sam?
Spain passed the ball over 1,000 times and dominated with 79% of possession. Yet with all those passes and possession could only muster up 9 shots on target.
Were Russia the better side for getting the result and holding in or Spain for their fancy passing game?
At least their players can join the Argentinians, Portuguese and German players on their yachts now. Bye bye Spain.

Yes, because they played to the best of their abilities and held Spain to a draw. They were then the best team in the penalty shoot-out.

For obvious practical and logistical reasons the World Cup is flawed, as is the case in all knock-out competitions, in that not all teams play each other. But that’s the beauty of a knock-out competition and what makes it exciting and interesting. I for one wouldn’t have it any other way.

Having said that I’m with Jimmy Sirrel (look him up) when he said, “the best team always wins, the rest is only gossip.
