If Real madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool or Man United ever come a calling for Mr Diame then I’ll dress up & go out & about town like one of said King St ladies at a time & date of his choosing
Apologies if I went off on one Edinburgh – a frustrating drive in to work where I twice had to run back & go home for somet was given steam in that little rant!!!
i think the “true Supporters” bit was the part that got my heckles up!!I take your point to be honest regarding continuing booing & heckling but in my experience it is far less prevalent now than it has been in the past under numerous managers
My experience of it now is also that the players don’t get continually booed or heckled – however i think its a natural reaction of a football supporter to leap to his feet & shout some abuse when (for example) Figueroa is taking no notice of who is behind him, just stops when a ball is played over the top & allows Damien Duff a free run on goal. I doubt there are many in the land who’s reaction would be to jump to their feet clapping & shouting “unlucky Figs, chin up, we know you can do it”
Likewise when yet another pass is misplaced its unlikely that the natural reaction is to clap & shout “unlucky, better luck next time”
In current circumstances with this manager I doubt an atmosphere like Galatasaray’s old stadium would have a positive effect on results coz his system, style & tactics are all wrong for a club with the quality of players we have against the quality of opposition we faceAs for people criticising getting boring with the same comments week after week – IMO blame the manager coz he’s the one making the same mistakes week after week. That’s what I’m finding boring
To be honest if i was able to get to the games as much as I used to I’d try & organise some form of anti-Martinez protest although i might try a different approach to the one I used with Jewell ;) but there seems to be a real apathy & acceptance of going down without a fight. The last game i went to was the truly awful Newcastle one on Jan 2nd – I sat in front of a group of people (some of whom I recognised from the Springfield Park era) who complained between themselves all game about numerous players (Stam was their principal whinge) & even at one point criticised Latics fans for not having the guts to express their opinions publicly on Bobby coz of Whelan’s threat to walk too. Come the final whistle they themselves didn’t do a tapPersonally i think Whelan’s rant was an attempt to call supports bluff. Even if it wasn’t he is now at the stage (if shareholders accept his share thingy to wipe out his historic debt) no longer putting up any of his money into the club so if he goes the club doesn’t go under as it is now only spending out what it gets in.
On top of that where is he going to go?? That is who does he think is going to buy the club off him?? If he runs it into the ground as a way at getting back at supporters who forced Bobby out then its hurting him financially not anybody else?Told you he was awful when we signed him. At least he is out for the next 3 games, which will make or break our season. As the next 6 games after that we play the top 5.If I was gary Caldwell I would take my pay cheque & deliberately play bad if the supporters were gonna gonna get on my back with every mistake i make!! ;)
I saw the article last night when i went to the local newsagent for somet else
I only scanned it & was gonna buy iy until I saw it cost £4.30!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I put it back
At the very least though without having read the article its good for a publication like that to acknowledge us as the most successful club of their era when many others in the media seem to forget just how much has been achieved at LaticsI found the best bit I did see though was the half-page picture of myself in the article and a personal mention as a “ghost supporter”!!!
As predicted earlier in the season, people wait to say I told you so about Martinez. Well I hope you feel happy that we are in this situation. The rest of us, who I would call supporters of the club, are trying to get behind the manager and support what gets put out infront of us. We arent overlords for the footballing world who can change things instantly, all we can do to influence the game is what we say on the terraces/stands.
You know if I were Figgy, I would play cr*p every week and take the pay cheque every month. As when players step out on the field and are instantly criticised by their own fans, which could possibly be the people on this forum (The doom bringers), why would you bother.
Ge behind the team and go down with dignity or stay up in glory.
No offence but what a load of rubbish.
Who are the true supporters?? The ones who slavishly back up a quite clearly incompetent manager no matter how many mistakes he makes & now matter how few lessons he learns from those mistakes or those who do not want to see the club they love run so poorly (from a football management point of view) & can see that the only way at present to improve Latics situation is to get rid of said buffoon
You can clap, chant & support Martinez all you want coz it aint gonna change a single thing. His incompetence, pig headedness & inability to learn from his mistakes will only take Latics one way.
Ys its unlikely that our spell in the top flight would have lasted forever but when it ended I would have liked to have seen it do so with some real guts & fight not the dreary, inspid, passionless rubbish that’s been served up since August 2009As for blaming the way Figueroa is playing on fans criticising him – do me a favour. The way he’s been playing this season he’s lucky to still be getting a pay cheque let alone not bother to try coz some people are getting on his back. When a player frequently plays so poorly as to make fundamental errors such as the one that gave Damien Duff a free run at goal the other week or completely leaves Van Persie to score the opener at the weekend then I think that the stick he’s been getting is far milder than he’d be getting at other clubs
i read that Villa & Sunderland are battling it out to win an £8mill race for his signature before the 31st. They want their feckin heads testin if its true & I’d snap their hands off for an 8th of that amountso oh wise sage -what do you do if you don’t have those type of players ?most managers would adapt their game plan/methods to suit what they have, but martinez still ploughs the same furrow week in week out and its killing us, the crowd and players all know it, the only person who doesnt know it seems is martinez,
Regardless of that, He has a point though Griff. Bobby talked yet again after Saturday’s match of “learning lessons” from the defeat
Bar improving the defence/keeper situation from last season I don’t think he’s learnt a single lesson during the 18 months he’s been in charge
I can take Latics getting beat, I can take us getting relegated & I can take our best players being sold & replaced with inferior ones & I will support a manager who learns from his mistakes & that’s why I can’t support Bobby continuing as manager at this club because he makes the same mistakes over & over & over & over again – quite what it is gonna take for him to realise that his system isn’t working & he doesn’t have the players capable of playing that system successfully is beyond meSome fair points there Griff but:
“But at least we are ….. making the opposition work.”
are you sure???????? My impression is that the opposition tend to sit back & simply wait for us to give away possession with a sloppy misplaced pass
For what its worth, I think Bobby’s slow, patient style of play may well be a work if a) he had the quality of players to do it against the quality of opposition we face every week & b) if there was any sort of movement off the ball from the players not in possession. The 2 may well be linked
He doesn’t & so, in my eyes, should try & implement a system that suits the players he has as opposed to square pages in round holes etc……Far from finding it fascinating watching players continually @r$ing up a style of play to which they are quite clearly not suited & a manager unwilling to see what’s staring him in the face I find it frustrating & annoying
I did see that bit where you mentioned not being @r$ed about what us tactical geniuses think, but I couldn’t be @r$ed paying any attention to it!!! ;)
Starting with – the playing surface is looking a lot better in fact it is looking far better than its looked at this time of year for many a year – well done to all the ground staffBobby would disagree with you – he named it as one of the 2/3 reasons the first half performance was so bad
The words barrell & scraping come to minddoes not think he may need to bring in new faces
he feels the three coming back from injury moses, mcarthy , and de santo will do the jobNot quite sure why he would think that when the club has been in the bottom 5 of the division for all but 3 games this season including when all 3 were available for selection to him :? :? :? :? :?
Regarding Boselli – I think we’ll see someone come in (albeit on loan) to cover his absence & was Bobby not interviewed after Saturday’s game saying he was stepping up his search for a new striker this week?
Or maybe he really is losing all his marblesGriff – I think Whelan’s hair is more white than grey. Don’t you?
Vat I think we all are but I don’t think sacking Bobby is the way forward. Our team without McCarthy, Moses, Cleverley is similar to Liverpool being without Gerrard Torres and Meireles (how bad is the liverpool squad). Only we are Wigan and we don’t have a squad full of world class players waiting in the wings and thinking about it neither do liverpool but you get my point.Leaving McCarthy & Cleverley aside, I’m at a loss to see how the injury of a player (Moses) that Martinez has barely seen fit to give a start to in the 12 months he’s been here & who has almost entirely been limited to 5, 10, 15 minute cameo appearances, and who even when he started to show real quality in those sub appearances is dropped back to the bench for the next game, is comparable in any way, shape or form to Liverpool losing Gerrard & Torres or even the only decent player Hodgson is supposed to have brought to the club.
Based on the number of appearances he makes its more comparable to them losing Ngog
I find it highly coincidental that we are in the middle of the window and suddenly (yesterday) they start putting out the ‘James McCarthy will be back soon’ stories along with talk of Mosed not being far off. I’m waiting for Roberto’s “it’s like having 2 new players” comments. You didn’t have to wait long Vat. See below from today’s wigantoday.net:
“But the Spaniard insists he will not be throwing money around willy-nilly in search of a quick fix to his side’s obvious problems in front of goal. We are not going to bring in players for the sake of it,” he promised.
“I am far more concerned with trying to get Franco di Santo, Victor Moses and James McCarthy back from injury.
“If we can get those three back to full fitness, they are going to be the best signings we can make this month”Even you couldn’t have expected it to happen so quick!!!!!
I agree with Vat – whilst i know that losing or drawing tomorrow wouldn’t kill us off mathematically by any stretch I think it could see us hit the bottom & some of the teams above us pulling away a bit
Psychologically I think it would be a big body blow to lose tomorrow
Fulham’s are probably the only away support which mirror’s our own at the moment so I’ll be amazed if they bring 1,100 or up to 1,500
Fair play to em if they do coz I couldn’t see us taking that many down there if we were in their situation
Currently getting all misty eyed remembering the league game there in 1997 when we filled the away end at Craven Cottage on that sunny day where David Lowe put us in front to bedlam from the Latics faithful only for one of their men to cheat us late on – I seem to remember someone diving for a penalty
my memory’s a bit hazy coz the night before a mate of mine had got paint on his pants after booting a paint can somewhere in west London & we tried to get it off using the dregs from a petrol pump. Only problem was that those petrol fuelled pants were then left out in our hotel room overnight & the pair of us were high as kites in the morning!!!
i thought when i saw the quote on the BBC website this morning that “old big mouth strikes again” but when you read what he’s actually said it doesn’t come over anywhere near as bad as “Scharner brands his team mates lazy & unprofessional”
Who i think will be yanked off by it is Roberto Di Matteo as I assume it was his idea to get rid of the fines system & that is what Scharner has said has led to the problems
Personally I’m glad we’re rid of the egotistical clown
Martinez’s soundbite the other day about Boselli was nothing more than an attempt to cover his back coz he realises that he has wasted £6mill of his clubs very limited funds on a player who he was advised wouldn’t fit into his system or suit the British game
Nowt wrong with buying a wrong un as all managers do it but I don’t think he can bring himself to admit this one because the fall out over it ultimately led to the departure of of his Director fo Football
