The club should have some sort of back up in place for if the undersoil heating fails. Its basic practice to have a back up plan
BUT
for only Wigan to be asked to explain their cancellation when everyone has seen the farcical situation at West Ham is a disgrace & thankfully that article in the Express is insinuating as much“When do you think, and why, did all this dis-interest start”
For me personally it was the late 90’s as we started to climb the leagues. The FA Cup became less of the big deal it was when I started watching Latics
Not saying its reet but its what happened – the feeling increased as our managers then started to put out weakened sides.
I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to fork out £15 of their hard earned cash to watch 2 mostly reserve sides regardless of whether we’re a top flight team or not. I went coz it was the first game me & my mates have been able to get to together all season. If it hadn’t been I wouldn’t have gone either, just like I didn’t go to a game in the carling cup run of 2005/06 until the semi-final coz Jewell put out weakened sides
Maybe that’s coz I’m very much from the old school train of thought that believes you should play your strognest available side in every game regardless of the opposition or competitionAnd Barrow took 9000 fans with them when they played Sunderland the other week.
If that many went to every home game they wouldn’t be in the conference much longer20, 30, 40 years ago the FA Cup was one of the highlights of the season for Latics. Like it or not it no longer is.
The same can be said of plenty of other clubs. Its a sad state of affairs but not one that we at Latics should be any more ashamed of than dozens of other clubsI doubt that very much!!
“Maybe Martinez will continue to sign players, but the goalkeeper and defence was the priority this week?”
Not saying he won’t but if he emplys the same tactics the same problems will remain
Back to the original post about Kevin Nolan, one of the blokes I work with is a long time family friend of the Nolan’s and he has been told by his dad that he aint going anywhere at present
In fact Nolan’s missus gave birth to a son this morning …. aaaahhh!!Don’t want no Bolton rejects at Latics anyway!!
“you can sign as many defenders as you want but until the spanish one realises that we need the forwards scotland or rodalegga and the midfield of nzogbia, diame and thomas to get among the opposistion defence/midfield when they have the ball as heskey, valencia, palacious and cattermole or brown did last year ie defend from the front we will continue to open up to other teams and ship goals”
Spot on. I’ve seen it in countless games this season where the opposition midfield have the ball, you look round to see where their Latics counterparts are and all bar one are pushed upfield in the gap between the opposition defence & the last line of their midfield, meaning the defenders/defending midfielder are outnumbered.
Its happened time after time from the start of the season onwards & Bobby show’s no sign of fixing it as it happened regularly against both Man U & Hull
It also means that not only are they outnumbered when defending but when they try to pass their way out of defence they get closed down too easily
You could have the best defenders in the world at Latics but stick em behind our sieve of a midfield & we’d still be conceding goals left, right & centreHow many “chances” do some people want to give Jason Koumas. He’s been here for 2 & a half years now & has had plenty of em & fecked em all up.
He has shown, briefly, in sub appearances that he can produce good moments yet when given a starting berth he flops & is dropped a couple of games later, doesn’t get a chance for a while, comes on as a sub down the line, produces some good moments, gets recalled etc…
Basically he isn’t good enough – whether that be down to his ability or attitude is irrelevant but he never produced “it” for West Brom in the top flight in 2 seasons & he’s never produced “it” for us. I’d cancel his contract & get rid of him for nowt but if we can get some gullible championship side to fork out a few million for him then all the better“I sit right behind the away dug out at the DW and can usually judge how good a team is by whats sat on the bench”
using that criteria, God only knows what you make of Latics chances of avoiding relegation this season!!!
“For an all premiership cup tie it was a disgraceful attendance, the second worst of the round just in front of Torquay.
Even Scunthorpe did better”
I went but don’t blame anybody at all who didn’t go.
In media interviews during the week both managers admitted that they would be putting out much changed line ups. Now Latics line up wasn’t as changed round as many expected but if you have managers of both sides admitting that the competition is not their priority why on earth should the fans be expected to treat it as much a priority as a league game & part with their hard earned cash for the privilege of watching 2 reserve sides regardless of whether it was “reduced” to £15??take your point griff but if they had held their hands up & admitted their mistake then, me personally, would have just criticised them for being inept.
As it is I’m criticising them for being inept & appearing to be telling fibs to cover this upAs for your guess that all games would have been cancelled if they’d been held on the Monday – I very much doubt it. From what i can gather there is only latics in the top flight who are uncertain as to whether they will be able to put a game on this Saturday. If every other club was in the same boat as us then they’d all be struggling too
All I’m saying is that the club said both they & the council had done “everything in their power” to get the go ahead to stage the game including gritting all the roads, footpaths etc.. yet those who have been down there said they saw little sign of that & that seemed to be backed up by the photos the club released
I’m assuming by what the club is now saying they are doing to get Saturday’s game on that “everything in their power” did not include a snow plough or the grit they are now putting downTo be I wasn’t going anyway so just missed out on a couple of hours in the pub but I just wish the club could have had the honesty to say “we didn’t grit the areas surrounding the ground coz we forgot/didn’t listen to the weather forecast/didn’t have any grit. Sorry” instead of appearing to lie (IMO) through their teeth
“Whelan takes a lot of stick from us and rightly so, but to blame the club for the present incumbent weather conditions is a tad harsh”
i don’t think anyone has blamed the club or Whelan for the weather. All they are saying is that the photo’s that the club released of the areas surrounding the ground did not seem to show any salt had been put down
The school I work at covers an area not much smaller than that of the JJB & paths round it (admittedly not the car parks & access roads) & I told the caretakers (2 of em) to get the salt down on all the grounds & pathways on Friday before they left coz every tom, dick & harry had seen the weather forecast. The snow & ice isn’t as bad here as it is in Wigan but they could have held a football match here come Monday night if they’d wanted!!
I’d also put my house on that there would have been no other club’s forced to call that game off on Monday night, including Bolton“Seems it was all about ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ for Ellington, and the likes of Roberts, Bullard etc later on. They tried the “please sir can I have some more trick with Whelan” after a good season and he wasnt having it as usual. Shame he couldn’t have been offered a decent rise to stay”
If I remember rightly, according to Ellington, Latics offered him a deal that had the possibility of earning him more than the deal he signed at WBA. However understandably Latics wanted his earnings linked to performances, goals, win bonuses etc.. & he wanted it all up front. From what I can gather WBA offered him a much bigger “basic” package & he took that
I said at the time that I thought Latics/Whelan/Jewell had done exactly the right thing especially when you bear in mind how much his form used to go from highs to lows & judging by how his career has nose dived since he left & think they’ve been proved right.
The others such as Bullard & Roberts all took new deals that were linked to how well they performed & they justified it. Ellington I don’t think had that confidence in himself – either that or he just felt he deserved a wopping great contract whether he “earned” it or notPS – why the f00k anyone would want a striker who has stunk to high heaven for the last 5 years back at this club?? he made his bed now let him lie in it. he is not good enough now – no matter how little he would cost
I agree that it would seem an alreet deal. Would prefer us to keep Figs till at least the summer though
