if we were winning games 1-0 every week it would not change my opinion one jot.
What utter BS
Just because a release clause was activated, that didn’t mean we couldn’t have done more to keep him (and I don’t mean just by throwing money at the problem).
You know the Duke didn’t want to go – his head was clearly turned – but ever since we arrived in this league we’ve not really fought to keep our best players and trotted out the “if a player doesn’t want to be here then we won’t stand in their way” line. THAT is nonsense. That’s the sort of thing strong management is supposed to preempt and prevent.
I didn’t say it was all downhill from there, but the rot started as soon as we entered the greed league and our naeivity with the Duke shone through. We didn’t have to let him go and certainly not to a relegation rival.
Problem is we’ve gone for the likes of Huth in the past and either they won’t come or we can’t afford the fee and/or their wages.
And there’s the rub. We can’t even attract Robert Huth. Speaks volumes
Huth is a proper stopper and is the model of what we need, perhaps the £5 million that stoke paid for him would have been out of our reach, but the £1 million that stoke paid for shawcross wouldn’t have been, whatever your view of martinez is everybody must see that setting a defence up is his weakest attribute.
Spectacularly missing the point again. Whether we believe Huth and Shawcross to be good, bad or indifferent players, the fact is that Wigan Athletic struggle to attract that calibre of player.
For the record, I think they would both be good additions to our team.
LMB – how can £5m be out of our reach when we’ve just paid c£4m for yet another winger?
Griff – we used to be able to attract that calibre of player (Arry, Henchoz, Scharner, Bramble, hell even Mario) so why not now if we can afford the aforementioned winger?
First rule of survivial in any league, but especially in the Prem is DON’T CONCEDE. You draw all your games 0-0 and you’ll stay up. For me that means the priority should be attracting and investing in a solid back line (backed up by a proper, experienced defensive coach).
i think the towel was thrown in when heskey and palacios where sold
if we had kept those and further strengthened the team it might have been a differant situation now
with crowds well over the 20k
instead the team was ripped apart and weakened every season after destroying what growing support we had and started the decline we now see
the final act will be the sale of the stadium to the warriors that is a certAgreed Bicky – though I think the rot started as soon as we got promoted, when we sold the Duke on the eve of our debut.
Plenty of other teams score with one up front – so yes, it can be done.???
We can’t, cos we don’t have the quality of service nor the right type of striker…and won’t in a month of Sunday’s until we sort both or change our formation.
And no way were we playing 2 up front – FFS, most of the time we aren’t even playing 1!!
Agreed – we could have wrapped up the game in that move just before their equalizer.
Now the window’s shut and he’s going nowhere Martinez better give him a rocket. Too many times this season he’s gone for glory and wasted a pass to a player in a better scoring position. If I was Crusat I’d have head butted Moses in his crotch for being so selfish.
Said on SSN,So im asking you lot?Sorry – let me just check this – our assistant manager said on SSN that he thinks it’s time his boss should go? Seriously?
If so, I hope Jones and the rest of the back room fook off with him.Never mind 92 – try all 160 if you include the conference, conf north and conf south!!!
Disgraceful Wigan, and disrespectful to the travelling fans. When I saw the result I was tempted to post a knee jerk reaction with a subject along the lines of Disgraceful, but I then thought “Based on last season and Palace in the Carling Cup, what did you expect?”
Subconsciously I (and I suspect many others) had known the result of today’s game for weeks in advance – it was an odds-on banana skin or if you want (as per another post) inevitable.
Palace and Swindon away for me, as a London Latic, were the best cup ties we’ve had in years – two chances to relive the old days of away games at local London clubs and nearby provincial towns, and get some much needed non-prem cheer.
However, I left Palace’s ground in August, as Papa puts it, “disrespected” by Bob and the team and I wasn’t going to experience that again…despite even at 4.50pm today still badly wishing I’d gone.TBH I understand how you and the others feel Yosser – football in general is not in a good place at the moment and is not helped by our own team providing little respite.

He leaves Moses and Diame on the bench. Two of our best players in the last month. Clever idea Martinez 1-4. Yeah good one. Still clueless then.
I presume they were both carrying knocks or something but you never know.
Stop talking sense, Lowey.
Or they’re both being courted by other clubs…
Have to say I was peeking through my fingers when Martinez decided to use Ben based on his last miss and the Boselli penalty experience last season. I was also surprised the ref allowed the sub before the pen.
Thankfully Ben also confirmed how 5hite Boselli was – £6m yet he couldn’t even put the ball in the net from a spot kick.
Blimey Yosser and Filmoss – you both feeling OK?? Shouldn’t threads like this be best left to the Lighter side of the board… ;)
Unfortunately the facts belie his belief.
Martinez season 1 – inherits a team of “dodgy signings”, but despite a 9-1 trashing still beats 3 of the big 4, never in the bottom 3, finishes 16th with 36 points,
Martinez season 2 – gives away 10 goals without reply in first 2 games, in the bottom 3 before Xmas, has his own team after 3 transfer windows, enters last game of the season 2nd from bottom, finishes 16th with 42 points on the last day of the season
Martinez season 3 – has now got his “strongest team”, yet suffered 8 defeats in a row, lost to most of the teams around us by 2 clear goals, in the bottom 3 in at the start of October and bottom after just 9 games
No matter how you spin it, that is not progress. We may have made massive strides off the pitch, but not where it counts.
Not saying it’s all Bob’s fault (and before you start…backroom staff, players and Whelan are all just as culpable), but we are nowhere near better off than in his first season and, in reality, far short. -
