It’s the leadership whose head is in the clouds. I can think of several experienced names that could fit the bill, but my gripe isn’t so much Gary (and him knowing and understanding our club is undoubtedly an asset).
My gripe is the process that yet again seems rushed and not thought through. What experience has he really got? If he was the only candidate, why? Did we really not consider ANYONE else? And if he was such a shoe in, why hasn’t he been part of the 1st team coaching set up for a while to bed him in? Caretaker I get, but so quickly appointed as permanent? Baffling.
He has my support – MM never did – but like Fil I don’t see this ending well.
I’m quite sure others were considered and maybe even sounded out. You don’t really think all this has all happened on the spur of the moment beginning at five to five last night?
A quote from The Master Fryer….. Chairman David Sharpe said Caldwell was the only candidate we considered. After a meeting with him on Monday and discussions all day Tuesday, Gary was the only candidate we considered because we are so convinced of his qualities.
I don’t believe the decision to sack Mackay and the appointment of Caldwell was not thought about or discussed between Sharpe, Whelan and Jackson prior to the events of yesterday.
It’s just the way we pile straight in with little thought it appears. Think we are all United in hoping GC does well. Just hard to be convinced.
You don’t really think this appointment has been made without little thought do you?
I do. And the club has form to suggest it has. Otherwise Coyle, Rosler and Mackay would never have ended up here and wed’ve binned Mackay for a suitable replacement long before we found ourselves well and truly fcuked.
Coyle was chosen through a selection process, Rosler was headhunted and generally accepted as a quality appointment by most on here and Mackay, well that was Whelan making the biggest cock-up of his life.

You are correct in pointing that out. But there was the little matter of a European qualifier on ITV that will have been a bigger attraction than shelling out £20 to see a very one-sided contest. Now, tell me what was the “alternative” on 24 Jan, or on 7 Feb. Or 24 Feb. Or 17 Mar?
Spoken like a proverbial masturbating scarecrow.
For anyone who’s wondering, Ron Stuart managed the club during the 1955-56 season.
Even I don’t remember that far back!
They would be a problem for a club with an owner worth nowtHas Whelan suddenly become bankrupt?
The Premier League ticket prices were very reasonably priced for Wigan Athletic fans and apart from that second season silliness very reasonable for away fans too.
We won the cup despite of Bob.
Remember being so close to going out in the third round because of his tactics and team selection.
The most boreing four years of football I can ever remember watching Latics.
Oh and I remember the man took us down then walked.
Cheers Bob the decline started with you.No we didn’t. You obviously don’t realise the absurdity of that statement.
He played an under-strength team against lower league opposition and got away with it. Many Premier League managers haven’t.
Subjective opinion but it kept us in the PL when Whelan decided he could no longer finance the debt he was racking up trying to compete with mid-table clubs and the reason why the previous manager decided to leave.
We got relegated because he decided to make the FA Cup a priority. He would have walked had we stayed up.
The decline started because of decisions made after Martinez left.Whelan took this club to heights we could only dream of 20 years ago by courtesy of his financial backing, shrewd judgement and business acumen. Yes there were a few mistakes on the way but for the best part he got it right. It stands as a testament to the man that this small town club surrounded by footballing giants lasted eight seasons in the Premier League, won the FA Cup and played competitive European football on gates of less than 20 thousand and didn’t bankrupt itself.
It had to come to an end of course and in hindsight perhaps Whelan should have handed over the reins after the cup win and relegation. He carried on but his judgement began to falter and those hiccups that had hindered our rise to the top became disasters, firstly by appointing the square peg that was Coyle then allowing Rosler to gamble good money on players that were unproven or just not suited at this level, culminating in the disastrous appointment of Mackay and his shameful and illfounded attempts to defend that decision.
“Trust me on this one”, Whelan said about Mackay but how can a man with an FA charge hanging over him on some not so trivial matter expect to successfully manage a football club with credibility and authority. We might still avoid the drop but if we do it will be in spite of Mackay rather than because of him.
We have so much to thank Mr Whelan for but it is a great pity that the wonderful legacy he intended to leave us has been so badly tarnished.
The question he won’t answer is who told him to lie.
”We also need to create a modern and robust player recruitment process, where every targeted player is researched, statistically measured, and watched in different conditions to ensure we have a complete picture of the player and the person we are planning to sign.”And there’s the reason why Rosler was sacked.
If there is any truth in that £20,000 a week, it makes me worry how much we’re paying Grant Holt to sit on his arse. He was signed at the same time by the same manager, wasn’t he? And a bigger name at the time, too.28 grand a week apparently.
Nice speech from Mr W. and his put down of the chanting Leeds was brilliant.Or maybe another faux pas from him which inspired Leeds on to the win?
Hmmm, Carl Bradshaw lifting the Auto Windscreens thingy as captain.
Surprising the things you forget, even though it is 16 years ago. The game was certainly one to forget. -
