Yeah that was a hard watch. It’s simple there’s too too many young lads with very little experience.
Hugill looked ok but it’s that age old problem we’ve had for the past few years:-
Do we blame the forward?
Or
Do we blame the service to the forward?Me?, I think it was the service today. I really don’t see the point of throwing a high ball up to young Hugill with 2 strapping centre half’s either side of him when he clearly wanted to play off the shoulder of the defender but if he does he needs support coming from the middle.
Hugill kept asking for the ball to be played on to his left side but for some reason we kept hitting it down the middle on to his right.
The difference between Rankine and Jones was there for all to see. Jones cutting inside gave Charlton a headache and a half but on the right Rankine simply wasn’t brave enough deciding to turn back at every opportunity.
Why did Hughes come on?, was Aimson injured?, tired? was it the player or the managers choice? because he looked ok to me.
No I’m only saying this because Hughes’s head must be on a different planet right now and it clearly showed with a few big blunders and one costing us a goal.
Up till then Charlton huffed and puffed but weren’t threatening as Kerr came but I said to a friend “A mistake will win this” and it did.
I might get slated here but Adeeko for me is not good enough. I’ve seen enough of him and not enough improvement in that time for him to justify a place on every team sheet.
I’m afraid between him and Rankine that right side was pointless no go area.
Had Kerr and Aimson had of stayed on I think the game fizzles out to a boring 0-0 but sadly it didn’t.Danson needs to back the manager
He needs money (wages or signing fee) to sign players not 12 month loanees. We need to build not chop and change every season because next season. If we’re to steady the ship we need to add an experienced midfielder and only then we might and I can’t stress might enough) we might be in with a slim chance a top half finish
Agree with that. All of it.
What we need to do is stop this tippy tappy backwards and sideways passing nonsense. This one up front crap. We aren’t City. Why does everyone want to play Pep Ball? It’s boring as hell and clearly does NOT suit us. Everybody tries to play that way, one up front…absolute bore fest shite.
442…2 up front, balls into the box from the wide channels. Do it. Other teams will be expecting a Pep ball V Pep ball contest. Absolute bo**ocks to Pep ball! Get the ball down the flanks and into the channels, crossed in to TWO forwards trying to get on the end of it.
I absolutely DETEST this tippy tappy sh*te we try and play. It is God awful. And play at a greater tempo, with intensity and purpose. Instead of 2nd gear laboured, turgid football.
Get some experienced dirty b**tard of a midfielder to solidify it all and allow Matt Smith to push up. He was playing that deep today, he was like a bloody sweeper. He and Adeeko do NOT work. Adeeko is not good enough. Simple as.If they don’t change, and they won’t, it’s going to be a long long season and we could be in real trouble. In his post match comments, Maloney shocked me by saying he was happy with what he saw. He also said Hughes head wasn’t right…so why was he even in today’s squad then? Shouldve been nowhere near. If he’s going or wants to go, get him gone.
Danson can either throw a bit of money for some solid reinforcements, or else be looking at a relegation battle. That team has League 2 written all over it. And a poor League 2 side at that.
Come on, we’re in a mess.
I quote my dad, back in 92 when the Premier League came in and Sky got their filthy mits on it all…
“Sky will ruin football.”
And yes, it’s killed, and is still killing, the game.
It’s eating itself up now, Football.
Sell him for an eight figure fee?
£10,000,000 then.
Never going to happen. If Burnley offer 2 million next week, he’ll be gone.
Utterly deluded.
Great timing….season tickets go on sale same time as the cull announcement. Everyone has an opinion on Humphreys….me….doesn’t bode well that Maloney desperate to keep him and Magennis but off they go. Academy butchered……and Kerr,Jones ,Macmanaman still picking the bones out their offers. F@@@ me would love to see what exactly our “sustainable” wage operating costs actually looks like. If we start getting oubid by the likes of Stockport, Burton, Cambridge, Reading etc then we’ll need to find the proverbial bottle/Genie to steer our recruitment. Humps will be one of league 1′ top scorers if he remains in this league…….I for one sorry to see him go….think he is a big loss .
Brilliant PR work….not.
Humphreys will likely come back to haunt us. I’d be amazed if Bolton aren’t having a think about getting him on board, as he’s put them to the sword a few times.
The squad we are now left with is a struggling League Two squad. Unless Maloney is given some backing, he’s going to struggle to get it strong enough. I’m amazed at some players we still have, and it’s a big gamble to see if Stones and Sze can hack it. Sze has never looked the part when he’s come on.
I think Jones and Kerr will soon be gone and if clubs cone in for Tickle and Hughes, we will be weaker still. And will need to bring in TWO keepers as a priority.I wouldn’t like Maloneys job, and win, lose or whatever, that’s why we’re are with him for the long-haul. Nobody else would come in and work with such a situation. No manager worth their salt, anyway. I feel sorry for Maloney.
Yes, Magennis, I’m glad he’s gone..not being nasty but just stealing a wage for very little back from him. Little bit surprised Luke Brennan has gone, I thought he may have broken into the team.Listen, unless by some miraculous thing Maloney ends up being backed or works absolute miracles, forget ‘top 6’. If he thinks that squad is anywhere near the top 6, he’s absolutely deluded. More like Bottom six. He’s just turned a bang average League One squad into a piss poor League Two squad. And in a League One that’s going to contain Birmingham, Huddersfield, and what will be a Rejuvenated Rotherham, as well as moneybags Wrexham and Stockport, if Maloney genuinely thinks this squad with a few cheapo and freebie additions can be in the mix, I’m sorry but he’s more deluded than I thought.
Definitely NOT renewing. I’ll go to a few choice games over the season, against the aforementioned teams, let’s be honest, tickets are going to be easily available.
I can’t see anything other than a season of struggle for Latics. Last season was bad enough sitting through it, but next season..nah not for me. ST sales will be down, I’m sure of that.
Hi there Leyland Latic.
Have you had an explanation & apology yet ?
We can’t afford to lose loyal fansHi. I received an acknowledgment within 15 min of the ticket office opening last Monday, saying my complaint had been passed to the “Ticket Office Manager” for action.
10 days later, as of now, nothing, not a dicky bird.
If they can’t be bothered, then neither can I.
To think how close I was to joining this Fans Fund thing, so glad I didn’t waste my money.
Sorry to say I’m done.
I’m done as well. Not renewing after 38 years as a ST holder.
This is NOT the club I supported. Thats long gone. I don’t like things whats happening with the club. This Fans Fund thing, the way they’ve been pushing it today, saying you’ll get a discount off your Season Ticket…yes, but the monthly payments of £18pm will mean you’re paying £216 a year for it. For some hoodie that will make you look like some cult member, and priority on away tickets.
I don’t like how people who are on minimum wage will feel obliged to sign up, when it’s money they can’t really afford.
The whole thing stinks for me. Then I’ve heard earlier tonight that club have made redundancies again. What the hell?
I’ve no doubt the stadium was his objective all along.Just read the ’12th Man’ collumn that Kendrick churns out with comments from the same old folk who love to blow smoke up the clubs arse on a regular basis.
I keep seeing comments of people saying ‘we are safe’, er not quite. We have 4 games left and 3 are away games that I haven’t got any hope for. One is against a club being revived by a new manager, Charlton, then there is Lincoln who are battling to go up, and then Portsmouth who are going for the title. If we lose these 3 and Cheltenham are picking up points, it could be squeaky bum time. They we’ve got Bristol Rovers at the DW last game. With how we’ve been, I can’t say I’d be confident of beating them.
Nobody can defend Maloney and how bad we are, surely?
Anybody who doesn’t think it’s all too bad, I hope you enjoy the 5000 crowds next season unless things change.
Outside the ground today and Sean Clare walked past, all grinning and laughing. I said to my lad “see him then, that’s what’s wrong, they’re just picking a wage up. If that was me at 2.40, I’d be somewhere in the club with a solemn expression, pissed off that I wasn’t playing.” They aren’t arsed this lot.
My youngest lad has lost interest in playing football and has switched to Rugby League. I said to him “if Wigan ever want you, would you want to play for them?” Being loyal to Latics, he said “no”. I told him off and said “no, I’d want you to play for them, you’d be stupid not to.” But this is part of the knock on effect from this absolute turdfest what Maloney is churning out.
I’ve had enough of him, and his aftermatch comments. It’s absolute crap, that’s what it is. 9 years to the day that Malky Mackay was sacked…the fans turned on him. Why is Maloney not being turned on? Because he has history with us?
Hes never a manager in the memory of man. I honestly believe I could do a better job with these players. His tactics and set up is shite. They don’t even look fit enough.
Coyle, Mackay, Joyce, Kolo The Klown…they were no worse than Maloney. He needs getting shut of as soon as possible, or the crowds are going to drop drastically next season.
Club goes on about being self sufficient and managed carefully. We’ll if they want bums on seats they’ll have to change things and improve what’s on offer.
How the f*** some folk stood clapping that at the end today, I’ll never know.
And how the club can have the absolute cheek to be putting things out about this ‘Future Fund’ thing, I’ll never know. Anybody signing upto such a thing has to have a screw loose.
Whole club is a proper mess.
Also Ran, it’s should say. As in an also ran club
Well it’ll be a very dangerous game for the club to play if all they do is look to pick up freebies and loans again.
The ST sales are going to drop. A lot of ST holders this season haven’t been coming to games, the odd game here and there. I reckon they’ll drop by a couple of thousand next season. The football that’s been on offer and looks like still being on offer next season, is hardly exciting and not going to attract people.
I’m not renewing and I’ve had a ST since 1986. I just can’t bring myself to commit again to every home game. Truth us, I’ve lost interest and don’t really enjoy going anymore. I know we’ve had a bad time with ownerships and all that, but this apparent ‘lack of ambition’ and the belief that Danson etc will be happy to just see us tick along as a mid table ‘also can’t League one club…sorry, I can’t go along with that.It works both ways. If some sensible investment is made to strengthen and we are a team pushing for around the play offs and above, that’s going to attract more people to games. Ultimately, if we then got promoted to the Championship, the majority of teams will come and bring 4 or 5 thousand away fans. More income. We keep being told we need to be run sensibly and efficiently, but we need buns on seats to do that and with how things are, thats not going to happen. Some ambition is going to have to be shown. This season we’ve been done over by some really mediocre sides, nothing sides who’ve come and beat us. Stevenage being an example. Support has dropped this season and it will drop again.
I was also sat in that temporary corner stand and we all saw the handball.
City were helped along all that season as the powers that be, and City’s board had strong connections within the Football League, wanted them back up due to their size and financial clout as a club. I’ve seen this theory mentioned elsewhere as well, it was so obvious.
When ref Terry Helibron asked Goater if he had used his arm or not, surely there must have been some thought in his mind that he HAD used his hand? Was Goater ever going to say yes? Was he hell. And the tackle on Kevin Sharp, wow, how that never got us a penalty, I will never know.
I’ve hated City every since. They just came across as a really sh**house club who were pushed back up by the powers that be. Thankfully we’ve had our revenge since, more than once.
I am thinking it could be this what you are thinking of….
I recall us playing Scunthorpe at SP. I think it was 95-96 and we had to beat them to have a last day chance of sneaking into play offs. I think we drew…I remember them scoring through a player called Sam Goodacre…think he had just come on. Other results didn’t go our way anyway.
I agree with everyone in what your saying, and see my ‘Crafting his own downfall’ post as well.
Cup Winners, you quoted him today “We had to take the ball into their half on a very hard pitch”.
Wow, I heard him say that and I thought ‘what the hell?’ Because obviously the pitch is the same for both teams. Out own pitch at the DW isn’t exactly Wembley at the moment. I think he was absolutely clutching at straws and it was a poor, poor comment to make.
I have a sneaky suspicion that he has lost, or is losing, the dressing room.
Whilst I know where you are coming from, I disagree slightly in that I think we could do with spending a bit of money, but just nothing crazy. I’m talking amounts of suchlikes as £300k to £500k, and nothing above. Obviously these are going to have to be players who will add something to us, rather than just like for like signings. For example, a striker has to be a priority.
It’s guaranteed that we are going to lose players, with suchlikes as Amos, Magennis, Kerr (I think), Pearce and Humphreys out of contract. Apart from Kerr and to a much lesser extent, Humphreys, they won’t be big losses and will be great to get off the payroll. I’d we are daft enough to offer Magennis a new contract, then it’s time to give up. He might be a smiley face around the training ground, but that doesn’t justify his wages. Pearce has to go. He’s hardly played in the last few years and appears to be made of paper. He’s given us no return whatsoever on all the wages he’s had. Absolute joke.
A bigger thing will be if we keep hold of Tickle and Hughes. If they go to Premier League clubs, it’s doubtful theyre going straight into the starting eleven. If we could get them loaned back for a season, it would be tremendous for us, and also the players. U23 level football isn’t the same as competitive lg1 football, so if I were the club and they are to be sold I’d try and get them loaned back for a season.
I think we are only about 4 or 5 clever signings away from having a side that can push for the play offs/promotion next season. We also have Josh Stones and Luke Brennan to come into the side as well, Brennan can take Godo’s spot and Stones to take Humphries spot. We could probably end up with needing to sign:Goalkeeper
Centre Back
Left Back
Right Back
StrikerI’d actually sign Goode if he was available on a free. Can’t see him playing for Brentford.
At a push, an experienced head to lead in the middle of the Park…we are missing that now. But depends who is available?
Busy summer for Shaun Maloney.
The thing is as well, to prosper as a club and be self sufficient, we need bums on seats. The football we’ve player this season isn’t going to grab people to come in. In fact, I know a lot of people with season tickets this season have been missing games, because its been dull as dishwater to watch.
Surely Mike Danson isn’t naive enough to think we can actually achieve anything by just constantly picking up frees and loans? They’re free of a club for a reason. It does need some sensible investment. League One, for the most part, is really shocking quality. 90% of teams are bang average. A little bit of investment into this squad and we can be top 6 easy next season. Look where we are now after a hit and miss, inconsistent season where we started on minus 8. With the right strengthening, we’ll be up by March.
A winning team will definitely help with crowds. We know how fickle Wiganers are. If we can get promoted back to the Championship, then your attendances will be bigger with bigger clubs bringing 4 or 5 thousand with them. But then again to survive at that level we would have to strengthen again.
The crux is most Wiganers, apart from the die hard 8-9k we already have, will only make an effort to come on the ground if we are playing well and winning most games. Always been the way. The thoughts of us starting next season without Tickle and Hughes is not a nice one, but if they do end up being sold, let’s make sure they go for the right amount, rather than giving them away, yet again.
I’d love us to keep both for another season or two but whether we can or not, I’m not sure.
I agree with both of you, Cup Winners and Skeggy.
I think if we had more depth in the squad, Adeeko wouldn’t have featured as much this season. I think he needs to up his performance levels if Maloney is going to bring some new players in, in the Summer, or he will be a lesser part player. Theres a player in him, but not quite ready yet. (IMHO)
Charlie Hughes was solid, steady on the ball, he really is class. As is Kerr.
Add about 4 good quality players to this squad and we will definitely be top 6 next season. That is without departures in the summer though. I dread Tickle and Hughes going, but if Premier league clubs come in, it’s an opportunity they can’t turn down. That said, let’s hope the days of fire sales have gone now and clubs coming and taking the piss, paying peanuts.
