The Bruce – Martinez debate is a non starter.. if Bobby had the players Bruce had, then things might be different.
Unlikely Bolshy – bar a couple of notable exceptions (Heskey, Palacios), the current squad is not worse than the one under Bruce. The difference is the management.
1. Bruce and his staff came with bags of top flight (playing and managing) experience and had been through the wars in the Prem and Championship
2. Although Martinez is talismanic for the fans, he ain’t jack to to squad. Bruce is famous and respected amongst players
3. As a defender, Bruce knew the secret to success the Prem is having a solid back line, not bags of goalsAs for his playing style, I don’t remember many folk complaining when we were hovering around 7th spot – and I don’t remember it being turgid…yes it was direct, and much of it was played down the middle, but a lot of that was due to having a strong spine in Heskey,Palacios and Bramble.
Whilst I’d love Wigan to be able to play like Arsenal or Barca, I would rather watch committed, direct football where we won/drew more than we lost, rather than attractive but lightweight and toothless football that gets us annihilated and embarrassed.
Maybe Martinez felt he had to play Kirkland as there was nobody else in Caldwell’s absence who could lead the team? Though Kirkland didn’t do a particularly good job at that either.
How often has whelan ever stuck by his comments in the media. Defo the dreaded vote of no confidence…but it might happen before Saturday if Hartlepool turn us over.
The end doesn’t justify the means Standish.
Would a trader that repeatedly loses millions for his company, but then pulls it all back with one lucky gamble, stand the test of time if he reverted back to type straight after? Nope.
I give all of my bods a fair crack at the whip, but if they fail to develop / respond to feedback then they go.
I fear The Egg and I might have tempted fate with some of our late night pre match insight…
Not wrong Vat.
Blackpool did exactly what I expected them (and any other unfashionable club fighting the odds) to do…a stark reminder of just how far we have [s:r598bd87]come[/s:r598bd87] drifted since we were in their shoes.
If only there was anyone at the club bar Whelan and Pollitt who can remember that “far” back. I wonder how many of the current squad have actually looked back at our history and seen what they are priviledged to be a part of.
Good luck to Blackpool – I hope they become everyone’s 2nd fave team just like us, Reading and Hull did in our respective promotion seasons.
Couldn’t agree with you more.
If I had let one of my managers start with a clean slate after some horrendous mistakes the previous year, and then watch them make the biggest mistake again on their first day back they’d be out the door no questions asked.
12 goals conceded and none scored in our last two Premiership games, against both the best and supposedly worst team in the division…
I always worry we’re going to get relegated at the start of every season…and have done for 25 years. Bar one year it’s always meant that I’ve ended each season happier than I started it. This year is no different, though am slightly less nervous than last year. Give me 17th now and I’ll be a very happy man.
Can’t really judge the strength of the squad just yet, but assuming we’re no worse than last season, its really the tactics and mentality that need to be right this season:
1. Maintain a tight defence – if we manage this, then there’s enough goals between the squad for us to get several 1-0s and 1-1s
2. Keep hold of/extend winning positions
3. Beat teams around us – we can’t assume we’ll bag 4 “top 7” scalps this season
4. Target clear opportunities for back to back wins
So … anyone got any spare, then?Martin – me and Andy couldn’t get none either. Come round ours and watch it in HD on Sky along with a curry and some cheap beers.
For the first time ever, on Monday we sold out our allocation at Chelsea…meaning that folk buying tickets to sell to Chelsea fans / Chelsea fans masquerading as Wigan have prevented me and another long term Latics fan from making the game on Sunday.
Bl00dy annoyed!!
It’s actually more subtle than that Bath and not difficult for us to still go down (assuming Hull find form for their next 3 games).
If we lose our next 3 by a difference of just 1 goal each game and Hull win two by a difference of 1 goal each game and draw the third then we’ll stay up by a GD of 1.
If Hull win by more than 1 goal in any game then we’ll be even on GD.
If they win by 2 and we lose by 2 in any game then we could go down depending on goals scored. Our 3 goals vs Arsenal may be more valuable than we think.
Staying Up, dont like saying I told you so but, not mathematically yet I know but can anyone seriously see Hull getting 9 points from their remaining 3 games, no me neither ,.Hull only need 2 wins and a draw to match us on points…and if they win or we lose by more than two goals in any of the last 3 games we could still go down.
Referring back to the original post, tactically deficient Martinez might be, but there’s no way either he or Whelan would let two of our (better?) players agree terms and complete medicals with another club whilst we’re still in a relegation battle and certainly not in the week before we play their supposed new club!
I think the red mist has clouded many folks view of the game. We have been a LOT poorer this season and most of the games we played in the second half of last season under Bruce were worse than on Wednesday.
I’m not saying that we shouldn’t/couldn’thave done better, but lions share of the possession anf 16 odd attemptson goal with just over half on target are pretty good. Had that been against anyone in the top half we’d be purring.
Many of you seem to think that playing an already relegated side full of reserves meant we deserved to win. Not so…and frankly it makes you sound like fans from all of the other premier league teams we berate for acting like Bertie Big B0110cks.
Yes we needed more bite. Yes we needed more urgency. Yes there were a lot of mistakes, but get over it. This isn’t the first time in recent history. Have you all forgotten some of frankly tepid performances the team put in under Jewell just prior to the Sheff Utd game?
The thread’s asking for positives…I know I’m scraping the barrell, but, hey, its better than being miserable and pessimistic.
Am banking on Arsenal suffering a loss of heart at being out of the title race and in reality only having 3rd to play for…and us being relatively tight defensively at home.
