Reet I did say the other week that I judge a manager’s season as a success if they have made progress from the season before & that if Bobby did I would say well done
I’m a man of my words so “Well done Bobby!!!”Looking at last season against this season, they’ve won the same amount of games, drawn more, lost less, scored more, conceded less, got a better goal difference by almost 50% & 17% more points. That is progress in anybody’s book
To be fair to myself whilst I have always said that I don’t think Bobby is the right man for the job long term (& I still don’t TBH), I have said on numerous occasions that I thought there had been a marked improvement in performances since the end of the January transfer window (with the exception of Sunderland away & the first half yesterday).
I’ve had a look at Latics results since 1st Feb & in the 14 games since then we’ve played most of the teams in the division & come out with 20 points. That’s just under 1.5 a game & if that form was averaged out over the course of a full season would get 54 points.
Make’s Bobby’s “I think we can finish in the top 10 next season” claim look not quite so ludicrous as I thought it did when he made itTwo other points:
1) I was glad to see at the end of the game the obvious high esteem in which the players hold Bobby
2) I’ve never been more pleased to have been proved wrongCouldn’t have said it better myself Tyldsley – well done to one and all! To add, it was also pleasantly surprising yesterday to see that the (sort of) 4-4-2 formation didn’t work and that 4-5-1 won the game.
Quite a strange feeling though to think that, ultimately, we had a better season than last year, despite spending almost all of it in the bottom 4!!
Edinburgh and Legolad – fair points. I just don’t think after Sunday that my nerves can bear having to wait nearly 60min for us turn on our style!
Where are you today slagging bobs subs off today got it spot on……….sssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhYes he did.
He finally saw the light – identified his poor performers, ignored Di Santo, and brought on the two players most of us have been crying out for for weeks.
Here’s hoping he starts with them both at Stoke – they deserve it after yesterday.
Hmm…we have been playing well of late, but we’ve also had 3 gilt edge opportunities in the last 3 games to wrap up survival and lost the lead in each. That combined with the results today makes me think our feeble luck may have finally run out.
It’s going to go down 3-4 teams all on 39 points being separated by goals scored, never mind goal difference…and as a result we’ll be under the line.
Not that that will stop me from cheering my guts out tomorrow and at Stoke.
Regrettably, no…
Wolves draw & Cheats lose; good afternoon then & our point could prove to be precious afterall. What we need next week is a Spurs cricket score against Blackpool. That could be worth a lot if it happens. We’re not dead & buried yet ! Let’s stick it right up them ass lickin pundits !
A very good afternoon for us if you also throw Utd losing into the mix and Liverpool putting the heat on Spurs for fifth place.
Must be the way you tell em then ;)
The question for me is what is our striker doing in our area? He should be up the field, out of harm’s way, dragging a couple of their players with him.We consistently defend far too deep, and packing the area means the ball ricochetes around dangerously.
 Were you saying that when Heskey was defending balls vs Sheffield Utd?
Nowhere near as sad a story as Stockport’s…
Duke – where on earth do you expect us to finish each year? And where, in my post, did I put a start date on us not being good at this “Premier League lark”?
Griff – I think your use of the word “now” implied that at some point we did compete in this league. Perhaps in season 1, but even that’s debateable, especially if you consider our performance post the cup final and extend compete to refer to dealings off the pitch.
So from the moment we scored to the moment they scored we didnt `sit back`?No we didn’t. Contrary to Charlie Nicholas’ comments, we took a deserved lead and rode out the half well in what must have been quite a tense and nervy environment.
The balance in pressure always swings in tight games like this and Everton were bound to push us at the start of the second half. We did very well, esp. considering N’Zogbia was carrying a knock. Moses deputised superbly.
The reason we didn’t win was cos we gave away a careless penalty and gave them pretty much their only chance – not a lack of attacking pressure.
Their assistant manager said we were terrific to watch towards the end of the match and I’d take his comments over a “pundit” anyway.Have to say I’m quite pleased for Bury. Bet they’ll be looking forward to playing Preston again.
1. Yes, but it’s not the unthinkable if we go down
2. Because now me and all me mates are married with kids, European qualification will be the only excuse I have for a boozy trip to the continent with the lads!
3. No. Just very sad given the incredible journey we’ve had getting here and the manner in which we let the opportunity slip from our fingers (over all 6 seasons mind, not just the last 2)
4. Loire Drive, Wigan ;)
Seriously, scrapping for survival at the foot of the Premiership, dreaming of an Arab owner, with maybe 1 season flirting with Euro qualification
5. Skelmersdale ;)
Seriously again, scrapping for survival at the foot of the Championship. It’s a slippery slope…
Beats me Lowey. The sub decisions at Chelsea and Blackpool stumped me too.
At Sunderland Stam can only have come on to replace an injured Boyce. Moses though was once again too little to late. He must wonder what he needs to do to get more time on the pitch.
Have to say that whilst I was annoyed again by di santo coming on, i was pleased he pulled one back for us and broke his duck with a poachers goal, which we’ve not seen for a while.
”What a difference a goal makes.” I know this wasn’t your point, Sammy, but I’ll take this title a different way.Do you remember the season we stopped up by goal difference? I always look back to the game at Old Trafford when we got a penalty in the last seconds already defeated. We laughed at the time saying “what good was that?”, but it was vital in the end.
Maybe Di Santo’s goal will keep us up. Just a thought like.
I hope you’re right Garswood, I really do, but the way things are looking, esp. with our low goals scored that it’s more likely 1 goal will send us down. Maybe the one we unnecessarily conceded against Blackpool the other week…or perhaps maybe one of the 10 we conceded at the start of the season ;)
Fortunately both west ham’s and wolves’ recent 3-0 defeats have brought our GD more in line. Now all we need is a few more goals scored. Hopefully Franco’s broken the seal…
