There are plenty of season ticket holders who have Latics supporting children/grandchildren, or know of Latics fans who have had to cut back on the number of matches they attend for financial reasons.
The biggest hurdle is getting people into the ground, once there anyone can be converted.
It’s easier still if you read what Sharner himself has said…….
Sharner has the option to extend his Latics contract one year at a time, without any first team guarantees.
Alternatively he can get a nice signing on fee, along with a 3 year contract, to be a squad player at somewhere like Fulham.
The shops are apparently being run by DW Sports.
That’s not a bad estimate….
We’ve done this issue to death on several occasions, and here’s the Independent article that was published in February this year, which states about Wigan:
Wigan Athletic
Turnover: £46.3m
Operating profit: –£17.0m
Net debt: £54.0m
Interest payment: £1.5mOn this basis, even if our crowds went from 18,000 to 25,000 = 7,000 @ 20.00 (average, incl kids) = 2.6M extra ticket income, then we would be some way short of breaking even
Strikes me that we (as a stepping-stone club) may be paying too much in wages.
Which is why the priority is to move on big earning players like Koumas, Kapo and Melchiot. The wage bill is near £40m, whereas recently promoted Championship teams are spending £10m-£15m.
For a club like Latics our Premiership wage bill should be closer to £30m, then you’re looking at selling one player per season to break even.
Get close to breaking even and the club would be an easier sell for Whelan, which would be his only opportunity to recoup his £39m.
The accounts of many clubs, such as Fulham, Aston Villa and Wigan, show that they are beneficiaries of loans from their owners, or rather usually other companies which also belong to their benefactors. On the face of it, this type of financing looks safe and cheap as it tends to come with a very low interest rate (often zero) and no urgency on repayment. The owners of Chelsea and Manchester City have even written off their soft loans of £701m and £305m respectively in recent months, making these two clubs debt-free.
We’ll see what Martinez really thinks at the end of the season.
Right now he appears to be giving everyone a pat on the back because he knows some players will spit their dummy out if he critizises them.
Against Villa I believe we let slip a nailed on point, never looked dangerous, and gave away silly goals.
That being said, everyone starts from a clean sheet on Saturday.
I can’t make any excuses for tonights performance.
Villa were a desperatly poor team who sum up the awful standards in the Premiership (outside of the top three).
I don’t mind losing to a decent team, neither do I mind losing if we create chances or are simply unlucky/come up against a good defense.
For 45 minutes we didn’t create a single clear cut chance, we looked like a poor Championship team who were well out of their depth.
If we stay up this season I’ll be embarrassed such a shambolic, gutless team survived, but greatful we’ve been given a second chance.
Before you can play your football you have to put the work in.
What does this even mean?
Against Liverpool we had something to defend, and did so well.
We only had something to defend because we’d closed down and tracked back from the first minute.Apart from a spell in the second half we were the dominant team in that game, out working them and playing the better football.
Without that work ethic you don’t make the last ditch tackles and such which keep you in a game. Too often this season we’ve been two, three or four nill down come the 80 minute mark, not even in a position to snatch a fortunate win or draw.
Martinez really makes you mad, just heard his interview, a mountain to climb being 1-0 down, his he taking the yellow water, and the team his drained after monday, give me a minute, get it sorted martinez and bring back some heart into the team,
Heart in the team? I’ll take this to mean scheissekickers, but correct me if I’m wrong.
It strikes me that the average Latics fan wants to see players chasing the opposition all over the pitch and putting the boot in wherever they can, something which supports the façade that the players are ‘committed’ or giving their ‘all’ for the team. In reality, it sacrifices playing football for a pursuit that would tarnish us as long ball merchants.
Before you can play your football you have to put the work in.
Thats what we did against Liverpool, and we got the rewards for it.
We are almost single handedly giving teams hope of staying up.
At this stage of the season denying our direct rival points is just as important as winning them ourselves.
Today we gifted Bolton Premiership survival, huge pressure has now been heaped on our shoulders.
You can have a go at Martinez and the team as a whole, but Caldwell has been our best player, alongside McCarthy, these past few months.
Just got in at 4.10pm, switched on Soccer Saturday to see we are 3-0 down.
I don’t know what’s happened during the game, but that scoreline is an absolute disgrace.
The Liverpool win has been wasted, we’re now relying on beating our relegation rivals at home.
We deserve to go down, this team isn’t representative of Wigan Atheltic.
It’s one thing saying Whelan has sold X number of players, but we have proven time and again, on our day, we’re capable of beating the best, to lose away against Portsmouth, Hull and Bolton is simply poor management, and I say that as a Martinez fan.
IMO the real hatred began when Latics started to make waves in the football world, the building of the DW Stadium etc. The rugby felt put out at sharing the limelight, it’s really that simple.
Many of the people who frequent the likes of RLFans are only just out of school/college, if that. Their knowledge of their own club extends little beyond the Farrell era, yet they feel entitled to dismiss Latics support as a bunch of JCL’s, oblivious to how this club has grown over the past 15 years.
Talk to a rugby fan from the late 70’s, early 80’s, and you’ll find little of the above, dismissive, attitude. As has been stated above, a great many support(ed) both Latics and the rugby.
Latics fans old and new have justified grievances with the rugby, but few these days bother to express these unless it’s banter in the pub or a thread like this. The real dislike is for those who support their top four club from the comfort of their armchair or in the pub, yet feel justified to slag off people who support their home town football club.
Until we can string more than one result together, no corner has been turned.
Once again our lodgers show how you go about things.
It looks like they have a marketing budget to rival Manchester United when compared to Latics, or is it just the dedication of the staff?
As always, credit were it’s due.
